Willson, T. (2014). Finding Budget Flexibility - or Not: The Impact of Fixed and
Variable Cost. Estados Unidos: Armed Forces Comptroller.
In a budget you have two variables: fixed costs and variable costs. Fixed costs
do not change at all, and if they do, they have to do with context and
circumstances, and are not related to production. Examples of fixed costs
include local rent, insurance payments, any loan payments, subscriptions, and
annual wages. They are the same throughout the year, making it easier for
them to be budgeted.
In contrast, variable costs change every day, and therefore every month and
every year. We usually think of variable costs in two ways:
Operating Costs: Include utilities (water and electricity), car usage expenses like
gasoline, office supplies and professional services charged per hour.
Cost of goods sold: As your production volume increases, variable costs will
also increase as you will spend more on raw materials, sales commissions and
direct labor
