Due to the widely varying conditions under which identical machines nay operate, it is impossible for the nanufacturer to state exact tine intervals Fonbich all inspections and/or maintenance should be performed, All inspec tions, maintenance and lubrication intervals reconnended in any I-R publts CURSOR Teptesent nininun safe operating intervals for average conditions, since there is no substitute for emperience or first hand knowledge of local operating conditions, Inspections are recommended for two hasic purposes at several intervals, They are discussed in the following paragraph A. DAILY, To determine that the rig is safe for inmediate use. THES inspection should bo made at the beginning of each tour, but not necessarily limited to the following: See VIII.G., page 22. 1. Be sure that the rig is properly lubricated and that the fuel, lube gil, coolant, hydraulic oi! reservoirs and brake water cooling reservoirs arc filled to the proper level, ?+ Gheck rig brakes for proper adjustment and feel before picking up loads. Visually inspect all pins, linkages and control rods. Be sure all cotter keys are in place, Be sure brake system operates freely. See VIII.G.1, page 23. 3. Check functions of all controls and safeties, 4s Check “all guylines for proper tightness, See VIIT.G.8,, page 23, f+ Gheck derrick leg and support leg matting for proper bearing and pos- ition. With hydraulic pump not running, move derrick control valve between peAZSEt and "LONER" Bnd between “EXTEND” and RETRACT”, See VIIT.G.4, , page 22, 1, Lubricate as required, See XII.A., page 35, 12, Aver Hirst Day of Qperation on a new rig, check "V" belt tension, all Soles and BCE Tor aa ness and propeller shaft flanged yoke bolts for shtness, Seo bolt tightness table under Weekly Inspection Schedule, pape 32.- ~ continued Rigs are designed and manufactured with a generous margin of strength in excess of that required to do the job. However, every rig begins to wear on the day it begins to work. This process will continue vntil, at some fucure date, the rig is no longer capable of its orignal work load, UNLESS ALL PARTS SUBJECT TO FATLURE ARE REGULARLY INSPECTED AND REPATRED OR REPLACED. The following inspections are intended to determine the need for repsir or replacement of parts “as re- quired to keep the machine in approximately new condition, NOTE Under no circumstances should any person attempt any repair for which he is not fully qualified or which he does not thoroughly understand. I-R personnel should be contacted in case of any queston, WEEKLY. The weekly inspection schedule chould include the items 1istea under the daily interval, It. should not be lintted to the items detailed below, which are considered to be minimus required, Knowledge of local conditions, age and condition of the particular rig, the consequences of failure and the severity of operation will affect the degree of additional inspection required for safe operation under known operation conditions. Inspect. the following: 1." Propeller Shaft Flanged Yokes: (On drilling rigs, due to continuous vibration, check every 24 hours.) Be sure to use Grade 5 bolts or bete All bolts to be full size to fit holes. Bolt length to be such that threaded portion of bolt comes only slightly inside nut and Into load bearing area. The monthly inspection should include all items listed under the daily interval and weekly interval. 1, Check all bolts and nuts for tightness. 2. Check all "VW" belts for proper tension 3. Visually inspect derrick for cracks (end paint flaking or cracking which may indicate potential failure) bent or missing members. ‘Take whatever corrective action is required. 4. Visually inspect reising cylinders, cylinder supporting structures and cylinder pins. Check for cracking or paint flaking. Cheek for pin retention and proper pin lubrication. Check for pin retainers. 5. Check chain drives for excessive sprocket wear or chain stretch. Check tightness of sprocket bolting to hubs. 6. Check tires for cuts, bruises or uneven wear. Check for correct inflation pressures. See ¥.C., page 28. 7. Check air system for leakage and tightness required. 5. Check front axle torque rod rubber bushings for tightness. See X.A., pg.28, 9. Make @ thorough inspection of all hydraulic hoses, fittings and tubing. Any deterioration of any system component should be questioned. Look for: : a. Any evidence of ofl leaks on the surfaces of flexible hose or at points at which hoses join the metal end couplings. b. Abnormal defermetion of the outer covering of hydraulic hose, including any enlargement, local or otherwise, ¢. Leakage at connections which cannot be eliminated by normal tightening. 4. Evidence of abrasive wear which could reduce the pressure retaining capabilities of hose or tubing affected. The cause of rubbing or abrasion mst be immediately eliminated. x D. E EVERY sx Mowras. 1. Remove and inspect all pins in raising systems, brake systems and other control linkages for wear. Pin looseness in retaining holes should be checked, Any pin surfaces where definite wear edges can be seen should be reason for pin replacement, Pin looseness in re- taining holes of more than .020 ~ .030 (.6~.76um) inches should be grounds for refitting, repair and replacement. Check all pins for Proper anti-rotation means if provided and for proper lubrication. CAUTION: Pin replacement should be wade with I-R Manufactured parts. This assures that proper pin material is used in high strength loading areas so that continued Safe operation can be ascured, . 2. Check brake block and rim coidition. Brake blocks should be {nspected every six months or sooner if scoring shows up on the brake flanges. ‘The blocks may have bits of metal picked up from the brake flanges which should be picked out. Under light load conditions, the brake flanges may become glazed resulting in lower coefficient of friction and loss of braking power. This condition can be corrected by applying a fine pumice between the live end blocks and the flanges then lowering the load. This may have to be repeated several times to remove glaze. TNSPECTION WHEN REQUIRED. This final type of inspection concerns individual incidents involving a specific rig. For instance, thorough visual inspection of guying, matting, derrick structure, and vire line system should be made after any instance of severe shock loading, whipping or Jerking of the derrick due to any cause, Inspection should be nade prior and following conditions of severe overload to ba sure that the rig is in safe condition to accomplish this loading and that no damage results from same. Also, inspection should be made prior to roading, rig up and rig dow, See 1I., Page 11; IV,, page 13; VIL, page 14, and IX., page 24. 34, YDRAULIC CIRCUIT TROUBLE SHOOTING If a function such as derrick raising or power tong operation or any rig operated hydraulic function does not operate at all or operates only at noticeably reduced speed or with noticeably reduced or insufficient power, the following procedure is, recommended: I. Gheck the hydraulic tank fluid level to be sure it's adequate and that it looks clean, II, Obtain a flow meter with pressure control. Install this flow meter in the inoperative function supply line (see Fig. A, Position 1) and connect its retura line to a tank return, Set the engine speed at the propér speed for function and check flow rate at no pressure, Increase pressure and monitor flow rate in reference to pressure achievable up to 2000 psi (14lkg/em2) maximum." "TE volume checks adequate and does not drop more than 5 GPM (19 liter/min) pressure and if 2000 psi (141kg/em2) pressure is available, malfunction is in power tong, raising rams or other final hydraulic pover Oa the other hand, if rated volume cannot be achieved or if 2000 psi (141kg/em2) cannot be obtained, problem is in rig hydraulic system, TONG RET. RESERVOIR t t t 1 1 ' ' i 1 1 ' | Y t i TONS, AVL E Ly sure RELIEF] Yh wpe [VALVE @ lev- pase, VALVE ; ' 1 { hy ch 4 M. ® © © Ubbblelel |} 1 er ert neuter (LAO ee guise FIG. A + If the system is bad, ask che question "Where is the ofl going?” ‘There are sone clues from the test made in II. A. If the rated volume was obtained and pressure build up was obtained to some level and then volume thru flow meter drops abruptly with no further pres~ sure imerease, the problem is most likely an inoperative relief valve. - If volume falls off proportionately with increasing pressure, the problem is most likely internal leakage through components such as bypass valves, relief valves or a worn out pump, C. If volume fluctuates and pressure is erratic, most probable cause is faulty pump or cavitation in the pump due to faulty supply to the pump. To isolate what the specific problem is, the best procedure is as follows: IV. Move the flow meter to position 2, Fig. A, by connecting the discharge line from the pump to it and running the flow meter return back to a tank return. Agein, set the engine at rated speed for hydraulic function and check volume over the complete pressure range. If the same data is obtained as was “found in II., the problem is in the pump or pump supply. Again, check oil level, Check suction Line for no blockage and for tight fittings. ‘Change pump if no other problem can be found.. Tf rated volume is obtained and pressure can be built up to 2000 psi (141kg/em2) ' with less than 5 CPM (19 Liter/min) volume drop, pump suetion end pump are 0,K, and : problem is between the pump and the faulty function, If this is the case, proceed as follows: V. Go to the next hydraulic device in the pressure system past the pump. This is most likely a bypass valve or relief valve. Tie into the supply line coming fron this device (Fig. A, Position 3) and repeat the volume and pressure checks. Tf the sane faulty indications are found as ware observed in I1., replace the bypass valve or other item between position 3 and position 2. If results are still 0.K. and meet rated conditions, move flow meter to position 4, Fig. A. Follow this sequence through the system until the faulty element is determined. ‘Then replace the element. VI. Tf the problem is traced all the way to the hydraulic control valve group, and it is a control valve with a relief section, a tong section, a relief section and then subsequent sections, a question exists as to whether the problem is one or the other relief valve sections in this valve. If the check made in IT. above was on the tong system, the problem will be in the inlet relief valve section, If the check was made on the derrick raising system, the problem could be in either of the relief valve sections. This can be isolated by placing the flow meter in the tong supply outlet so that readings can be taken against the first relief valve. If these readings are all 0.X., the problem is in the second relief valve and it is in need of replacement. VII. If 2 pressure beyond valve assembly is used in the system, this will be the next place for the flow meter pressure check. Using the above sequence, a logical and methodical system of isolating any hyd- raulic malfunction to a specific component exists, This is the only way to find "Where is the oil going?" Don't trust pressure gauges, Change them out £f you're in doubt. Bub. When installing a propeller shaft, the yoke on each end of the shaft must be In the same plane so that both yokes are parallel, This condition is referred to as "In Phase". If a slip joint has been disassembled for any reason, insure that both end yokes are "In Phase" at reassembly. : YPTON: PROPER PHASING OF PROPELLER SHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINTS 18 ESSENTIAL To PREVENT VIBRATION, PREMATURE BEARING AND U-JOINT FAILURE, AND DAMAGE TO RELATED DRIVE LINE COMPONENTS. NOTE: WHEN REASSEMBLING SLIP yoiNT, INSURE THAT YOKES ARE PARALLEL.
