OPEN PIT OPERATIONS
91.14% of coal production is extracted in open
pit mining areas through highly technical operations
in the departments of Cesar and La Guajira, of
Paleocene-Eocene age formations, where thermal
coal is produced for export, mostly through ports on
the Atlantic Ocean.
UNDERGROUND OPERATIONS
According to estimates of the International Energy
Agency (2017), Colombian coal has 0.650 tonnes The remaining 8.86% of the production is extracted
underground by exploiting coal beds in the departments of
of oil equivalent (toe) per tonne, which
corresponds to the highest calorific value among Antioquia, Valle and Cauca with thermal coal, while high
quality thermal and metallurgical coal is extracted in
the ten main producers worldwide. The calorific
power is variable according to the carboniferous Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Santander and Norte de Santander.
This production supplies the domestic market and allows the
zone, reaching up to 14,161 BTU / Lb.

EXPLOTACIONES A CIELO ABIERTO
El 91,14% de la producción de carbón es extraída
en las zonas mineras a cielo abierto mediante
operaciones altamente tecnificadas en los
departamentos del Cesar y La Guajira, de formaciones
de edad Paleoceno-Eoceno, en los que se produce
carbón térmico para exportación en su mayor parte
por los puertos sobre el océano Atlántico.
De acuerdo con estimaciones de la International Energy
Agency (2017), el carbón colombiano posee 0,650
toneladas equivalentes de petróleo (toe) por cada
tonelada, que corresponde al poder calorífico más alto
entre los diez principales productores a nivel mundial. El
poder calorífico es variable de acuerdo con la zona
carbonífera, alcanzando hasta 14.161 BTU/Lb.
EXPLOTACIONES SUBTERRÁNEAS
El restante 8,86% de la producción se extrae de manera
subterránea, explotando mantos de carbón en los
departamentos de Antioquia, Valle y Cauca con carbón
térmico, mientras que en Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Santander
y Norte de Santander se extrae carbón térmico y metalúrgico
de gran calidad. Esta producción abastece el mercado interno
y permite la exportación de carbón metalúrgico y coque.
