RESUMEN
ABSTRACT
Within the framework of the implementation of good environmental practices at the National University of
Engineering (UNI), the study of solid waste characterization was carried out at the Faculty of Industrial and
Systems Engineering (FIIS) in September 2019. Among the results obtained are the total daily generation
of waste amounting to 20,801 ± 10,546 kg, the per capita generation 0.068 kg / room * day. It was found
that about 35.443% of all waste corresponds to organic waste. Recyclable waste represents 29,423%, the
amount of unusable waste amounts to 28,842% and leachate generated around 5,926%. Based on the
characterization work, it was determined that organic wastes are mainly composed and know the content of
recyclable materials, such as PET bottles (7,301%), cardboard (6,827%), paper (7,019%), glass (3,180%) ,
Reusable plastic (1,391%), Tetrapack (0.745%) It was found that in the FIIS there is no program for the
selective segregation or reuse of waste, in addition there is a bad management in the collection of waste by
the evidenced cleaning staff in the accumulation of them in unclassified containers and the lack of
environmental awareness on the part of the students due to the generalized use of disposable materials,
for a single use. The improvement proposals considered for the case studied range from the creation of a
selective segregation plan in the FIIS to the use of compost generated from its own generation of organic
waste.
