En mil ochocientos setenta seis se convierte diputado de por Paita del Congresos de la
Republica. En abril de mil ochocientos setenta y nueve pide licencia del congreso para asumir
el mando del Huáscar en la guerra del pacifico. El veintiuno de mayo hunde a la corbeta
chilena “Esmeralda “y ordena salvar a los sobrevivientes. Durante cinco meses, el monitor
Huáscar detuvo el avance chileno pero el ocho de octubre fue acorralado por la flota enemiga
en la Punta de Angamos. Grau no quiso abandonar su puesto de combate. Se inmoto por el
país.

Ahora lo recuerdan como el caballero de los mares, tiene un museo en Piura.
