Canon ea ee MODELS AFFECTED / SERIAL NUMBERS AFFECTED: All High Volume imageRUNNER Products ‘SUBJECT: The Importance of Quality Assurance and Preventive Maintenance to Minimize Copy Quality Issues and Ensure Peak Performance GENERAL: This Technical Publication is to reiterate to the field the importance of Quality Assurance Checks and Preventative Maintenance when providing service for the high volume imageRUNNER products It will also provide detailed information pertaining to the types of checks and replacements that should be performed as well as when they should be performed. DETAILS: Regularly scheduled Preventive Maintenance, especially replacement of parts that are considered consumable type items, which are called out for replacement in the Service Manuals, is becoming more important in the high volume service marketplace every day. Because of inercasing copier and printer speeds, as well as increased copy/print volume, Canon U.S.A., Ine. is seeing many new and unusual copy quality symptoms resulting from the lack of preventive maintenance, use of third party replacement parts, improper use of Canon service replacement parts and even the improper swapping of assemblies from one model to another. Canon U.S.A., Inc, cannot stress enough; the importance of performing regularly scheduled quality assurance checks and routine periodic parts replacements and preventative maintenance on time and using the correct Canon Service Replacement Parts. Failure to perform regularly scheduled preventative maintenance and parts replacements will seriously affect equipment performance and reliability to a point where individual component performance expectations could become unrecoverable. ‘Some of the current issues found on imageRUNNER 5000, imageRUNNER 8500 & imageRUNNER 105 machines will be discussed in the following pages. ‘HHS TECHNICAL PUBLICATION IS THE PROPERTY OF CANON U S.A. Developing Assembly ‘© Replace the Developer Sleeve and Spacer Rollers at 1 million images as called for in the Service Manual page 5-4 (IR8500), page 5-3 (IR105), ¢ On IRRSO0 machines serial numbers MPROOO1 ~ MPRO04196 the value recorded on the High Voltage Transformer may have been incorrectly input into service mode settings at the factory. This could adversely affect the developer bias. TLis recommended that if fogging or background exists on serial numbers in this range, the value in COPIER > ADJUST > DEVELOP > HVT-DE be decreased by “21”. (Ex: +8 to—13). The value on the service specifications (door specs) should be changed and recorded ‘+ When removing the cover to clean the developer cylinder, do NOT loosen the wrong screws! See the removal procedure in the IR60O Service Manual on page 0-71 for the details regarding which screws to remove, Note that it recommends not removing or adjusting the magnetic blade in the field. If you inadvertently loosen the wrong screws you will loosen the magnetic blade that sets the height of the toner on the developer cylinder. The result of this may be background or uneven density. If this should occur you will need to adjust magnetic blade and there is no adjustment or specification in the Service Manual. The gap at each end of the Cylinder & Blade should be 0.2mm or 0.008inches. 3. Fixing Assembly, + Replace both of the fixing rollers and their respective bearings aud bushings at the intervals prescribed in the Service Manual page 5-5 (IR8500), page 5-4 (IR105). «Ensure the reassembly of the fixing assembly is done correctly and with caution as described in Technical Publication TP02 015.pdf. 4. General: ‘© When using the Service Manuals for either the IR8500 or R105, if the information you are looking far is not in there, refer to the IR600 Service Mannal_ Roth of these models are leverage products from the IR600 engine and only the differences are published in the respective service manuals ‘* Ensure you use the correct service replacement part for the imageRUNNER model you are working on. Ex: [R8500 & IR105 have different Drum Cleaning Blades and different developer cylinders. This means you should not ewap a developer assembly from an IR8S00 to an IR10S, or visa-versa. This issue as it turns out is very common. Many technicians are required to stock a vehicle with replacement parts. Some technicians are servicing a wide variety of equipment and need to stock many different parts. Some of these parts may appear to be identical but are not! LL Page 3 of 7 Canon [meaty ear LT Ost pat General (cont ) ‘+ Clean or Replace the Filters. ‘* Check and empty or replace the waste toner collection bottle © Clean the interior surfaces of the machine and the outer covers. © Take the time to clean the sensors in the document feeder. Lake the time to talk to your customer and inform them of what was wrong with their equipment and what you did to fix it and keep it in good running condition ‘The Maintenance, Servicing & Troubleshooting Chapters provided in every Service Manual have charts and tables included in the chapters to guido you through the necosoary stops in performing regularly scheduled maintenance tasks and periodic parts replacements. These charts include items including work to be performed, checks to make, items to clean, lubricate, replace, etc. Utilize them, NOTE: Many parts on these models may appear to be identical. They are NOT! Swapping parts from one machine to another is NOT an acceptable method of troubleshooting so do not swap parts from one model to another! Use the correct service replacement parts as called for in the parts catalogs.
