OPEN SCIENCE

Dr. John Tennant

We are in the middle of a global research [r]evolution

These are (at least) five major “crises”:

1. Access – Most research still paywalled to most people

2. Reproducibility – Much research fails basic reproducibility tests
3. Serials – The dramatic Price increases of journals
4. Evaluation – The metric that shall not be named
5. Copyright – No longer serves researches or creators

We are stuck in closed ways of diffusion of science, with little option to reproduce and a
closest way of being just advertising.

Tools for open sharing

Mega-publishers are corrupting open science:

- Organisations stuck in a pre-digital mindset with a key product developed in the 17th
century
- Basically, the reason why Open Science movement began
- Business models based on exclusion, exploitation of privilege, discrimination,
extortion, etc.
- Who pay lip service to Open Science, while simultaneously subverting it to meet their
own intentions?
- We DO NOT share the same values and principles.

Four principles of the information system supporting research:

1. Transparent
2. Interoperable
3. User control
4. Source neutral

Instead of Plan s trying to impose itself on the rest of the world (Neo-colonialism), we should
be asking how we can cooperate and learn from the huge successes of Latin America.

Problemas de la investigación:

- Replicabilidad
- Pertinencia (oportuna y conveniente)
- Relevancia (temas de importancia)
- Impacto Verificable (Citas)
- Impacto Social (?)

Socialmente disponible (Acceso abierto)

Writing tips for researchers

Why publish?

- Fame:
o Recognition by peers
- FOrtune:
o Promotions
o Grant applications
- Establish precedence
- Responsibility:
o Taxpayer-funded research
- Making your research public:
o “If your research does not generate papers, it might just as well not have been
done”. George WHitesides.
o Papers provide the shoulders that others can stand on.

What to publish?

- Original research articles

o Share new results.
o Rapid communications, letters, full papers.
- Literature reviews
o Discuss knowledge accumulated in published literature.
o Reviews, mini-reviews, overviews, perspectives, essays.

Where to submit?

- Journal Impactor Factor is not everything!

- What are the implications of your research?
- Whom do you want to reach with this publication? Whom can you (realistically) reach?
- How important will others find your research?
o In your fields?
o In related fields?
- Where do you read papers related to your research? Which do you like the most?
- What is the scope of your candidate journal?
- Who reads your candidate journal?
- What is the format of your candidate journal?

- What is their policy on prior publication?
o In online/only printed conference proceedings
o In online

Content access:

- Subscription only journals:

o Free to publish but need to be subscriber to read
- Open Access Journals:
o Articles are freely accessible online
o Authors can pay an Article Publication Charge (APC)
o The APC can be paid via the authors instituton or funding.
