Composer’s Note
Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936) is one of my favorite poets.
Part of a large group of avant garde poets, artists, and intellec-
tuals in Spain in the 1920s and 1930s, Lorca was abducted and
murdered in 1936 by Generalísimo Franco’s Nationalists sympa-
thesizers at the outset of the Spanish Civil War.

About the Song Cycles
A native of Superior, Wisconsin, Robert Kenneth Evans travelled widely after serving as a
US Army telegrapher in Europe and the Pacific during and after World War II. He composed
these seventy-four songs while studying in Paris, Vienna, and New York between 1952 and
1955. These song cycles show a rich variety of influences from Iberian melodies to those
of traditional Japan and mid-century America. These songs also reflect the composer’s
wide interest in languages with texts from poems in Spanish, Italian, French, German,
Portuguese, and English.

About the Compsoser
Musicologist, linguist and musician Robert K. Evans (1922-2009) taught vocal literature
with an emphasis on the interpretation of poetry and diction for forty five years at leading
music schools, including the New England Conservatory of Music, Indiana University,
University of Cincinnati, Columbia University’s Teachers College and McGill University.
At both Indiana and Cincinnati he established and directed the vocal literature course for
the Masters and Doctoral programs.
Throughout their long careers, both
Robert and his wife, Lucile Villeneuve
Evans, would often simultaneously
coach and accompany during voice
lessons.
Many former students have gone
on to enjoy careers in the ‘A’ Häuser
of Germany and Austria as well
as in North America, including
such singers as Barbara Daniels,
Helene Schneiderman and Jessica
Muirhead. Dr. and Mrs. Evans were
frequent judges in the NATS vocal competitions over the years and devoted summers to
master classes in Europe.
His Ph.D. from the Ohio State University (1971) was in the fields of Slavic Linguistics and
Musicology. Dr. Evans opera coaching reflected his speaking fluency in Russian, German,
French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, formal study of Hungarian, Early Russian, Polish,
and Old Church Slavonic and a reading ability in and phonological familiarity with Czech,
Slovak, Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Catalan, Galician, and Finnish.
Among his published translations, that of Prince Igor by Borodin and Yevtushenko’s text
employed in the 13th Symphony of Shostakovich, have been accorded highly successful
public performances. An accomplished pianist, Robert Evans collaborated with the
following composers in preparation of live performances of their works: Alexander
Cherepnin, Charles Cushing, John Edmunds, Carlisle Floyd, Scott Huston, Jan Meyerowtiz,
Francis Poulenc, Ned Rorem, Roger Sessions. He had extensive performance experience
with noted singers, including Eleanor Steber, Jennie Tourel, Moishe Rudinow, Hans Hotter,
Italo Tajo, Noëmi Pérugia, and Renato Capecchi, among many others.
