ABSTRACT
Environmental biotechnology uses the features of the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) for metal
removal and recovery in acid mine drainage (AMD). The application of sulfate-reducing process
in expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors represents a new method for the combined
elimination of organic matter (COD), sulfates ( ) and metals ( ) in high charges. With
the above, the aim of this study was to evaluate the simultaneous removal of COD, and
0.14 to 1.5 . The ratio was gradually lessen from 5.12 to 0.67. The
metallic ion loading rate (MLR) was progressively increased from 0.05 to 0.3
. The results showed respectively maximum removal efficiencies of COD, and
of 98, 99 and 100%. The biogenic sulphide production reach to the 576
. The formed copper sulphide (CuS) was removed from the reactor by an attached
settler. The largest biogas production was 0.272 . In the batch toxicity tests
. It concludes that the process is able to remove simultaneously and entirely organic
matter, sulfates and metal ions of the synthetic effluent. In addition, the process is suitable for
the treatment of divalent heavy metals concentrations in the range from 0.05 to 17.6
.
