Descripción

El vuelo AV052 de Avianca (Bogotá - Medellín - Nueva York-JFK) despegó de Medellín a


las 15:08 con aprox. 81000 libras de combustible a bordo. Al llegar cerca de Nueva York,
la aeronave tuvo que ingresar a 3 patrones de espera. El primero durante 19 minutos
sobre Norfolk, el segundo durante 29 minutos sobre New Jersey y el tercer patrón sobre la
intersección de CAMRN durante 29 minutos. A través de CAMRN, el avión descendió de
FL140 a FL110. A las 20:44:43, mientras se mantenía en CAMRN por 26 minutos, el
controlador de radar ARTCC de Nueva York (NY) recomendó a AVA052 esperar
autorización de aproximación a las 21:05. En ese momento, la tripulación de Avianca
informó a ATC que solo podían esperar 5 minutos más y que no podía acceder al alterno
debido al bajo nivel de combustible. El vuelo abandonó el patrón de espera a las 20:47 y
la tripulación se contactó con TRACON de Nueva York (Terminal Radar Approach Control)
que guió a AV052 para una
aproximación ILS para la pista 22L. A
las 21:15, la tripulación se contactó
con la Torre JFK y fueron autorizados
a aterrizar cuatro minutos más tarde.
Debido al mal tiempo (300 pies de
techo, 400 m de visibilidad, RVR,

Datos de la aeronave

La aeronave del vuelo 52 era un Boeing 707-321B con matrícula HK 2016, fue construida en
junio de 1967 y había sido propiedad de Pan Am hasta 1977. En el momento del impacto, el
avión contaba con más de 61 000 horas de vuelo, se encontraba equipada con cuatro
motores JT3D modificados con hush kits para reducir la contaminación acústica.

Conclusiones

El accidente ocurrió cuando los motores del avión perdieron potencia como resultado del

aproximación por instrumentos al aeropuerto JFK.
