elementos y los coloca bajo un impulso tan unitario, que han de soportarse
perfectamente o repelerse radicalmente»25.
La exigencia de cohesión social impulsa a determinados grupos, bajo
determinadas circunstancias, a buscar enemigos fuera de él, o a persistir en
su postura ante la condescendencia y tolerancia de su oponente, para que
la «unidad de los elementos siga actuando como un interés vital»26. Esta-
mos ante una de las aportaciones centrales de Simmel: la consideración del
conflicto como la base de la formación grupal, «el sentido unificador que
tiene la lucha» o «la función cohesiva del conflicto»27, pues «merced a la
lucha acontece, a veces, que no sólo una unidad ya existente se condensa
con más energía y excluye radicalmente todos los elementos que pudieran
contribuir a borrar los límites que la separan del enemigo, sino que la lucha
obliga a concentrarse a personas y grupos que, sin ella, nada tendrían de
común»28.
