How important is food in your life?

I was eighteen years old when I came to England with my husband and I didn't know
how to cook! I needed to learn quickly, so I read books and asked friends for help. I
also went on a cooking course. I learnt to cook traditional Sri Lankan and Indian dishes.
I also cooked English food. I really enjoyed it and became a chef. My husband finished
his degree in business and so we decided to use our skills together. We opened a Sri
Lankan restaurant in 1990 and it became so successful that we opened a second
restaurant seven years later. Food is so important to me: it is my hobby and my
passion and it never feels like a job.

¡Tenía dieciocho años cuando vine a Inglaterra con mi esposo y no sabía cocinar!
Necesitaba aprender rápidamente, así que leí libros y les pedí ayuda a mis amigos.
También fui a un curso de cocina. Aprendí a cocinar platos tradicionales de Sri Lanka e
India. También cociné comida inglesa. Realmente lo disfruté y me convertí en un chef.
Mi esposo terminó su carrera en negocios y decidimos usar nuestras habilidades
juntos. Abrimos un restaurante de Sri Lanka en 1990 y tuvo tanto éxito que abrimos un
segundo restaurante siete años después. La comida es tan importante para mí: es mi
hobby y mi pasión y nunca se siente como un trabajo.

Italy wins the World Cup:

I remember when Italy won the World Cup in 2006. I was staying with
some friends in Florence. We were having a meal on a hot summer's
evening on a rooftop which had a fantastic view over Florence.
Everything was quiet and beautiful. I didn't realise at the time that
everybody was inside watching the match on television. Suddenly
there was a huge noise. I didn't know what it was at first, but then I
realised Italy had just scored and won the World Cup. Within minutes
everyone was on the streets shouting, dancing, kissing and sounding
their car horns. The party lasted all night long. I'll never forget that
night.

Recuerdo cuando Italia ganó la Copa del Mundo en 2006. Me estaba

quedando con unos amigos en Florencia. Estábamos cenando en una
calurosa noche de verano en una azotea que tenía una vista
fantástica de Florencia. Todo estaba tranquilo y hermoso. No me di
cuenta en ese momento que todos estaban dentro viendo el partido
en la televisión. De repente hubo un ruido enorme. Al principio no
sabía qué era, pero luego me di cuenta de que Italia acababa de
anotar y ganar la Copa del Mundo. En cuestión de minutos, todos
estaban en la calle gritando, bailando, besando y tocando las bocinas
de sus autos. La fiesta duró toda la noche. Nunca olvidaré esa noche.
