Imagine that you are naive.

What you are when you are naive is someone who thinks you trust
people, because you think everybody has good motivations. Here is the developmental pathway.
First, you are naive and you trust everyone. Then someone cuts you off at the knees, or multiple
people do, or maybe you cut yourself off at the knees because you trusted yourself too much
and you didn't take into account the malevolence that lurks in your heart and the hearts of others,
so that you get traumatized by betrayal. Then you become cynical. You think, "Jesus, I'm a lot
smarter now that I'm cynical!" And you are! Because cynical is a move up on naive. But it is not
the last move. The last move is to transcend cynicism and to say, "Even though I know that
there are just as many snakes in your heart as there are in my heart, I'm going to hold out my
hand in trust, because that's the best way to elevate both of us.

Esta es la ruta de desarrollo. Primero, eres ingenuo y confías en todos. Luego, alguien te apuñala
por la espalda, o varias personas lo hacen. O tal vez tú te apuñalaste a ti mismo por la espalda,
porque confiaste demasiado en ti y no tomaste en consideración la malicia que acecha en tu
corazón y en el corazón de otros. Así, quedas traumatizado por la traición. Luego, te vuelves
cínico. Piensas, “¡Vaya, soy mucho más inteligente ahora que soy un cínico!”, y lo eres, porque
ser cínico es un paso que sigue a ser ingenuo. Pero no es el último paso. El último paso es ir más
allá del cinismo y decir, “Aunque sé que hay tantas serpientes en tu corazón como en mi
corazón, voy a extender mi mano con la esperanza de que esa es la mejor manera de que ambos
nos elevemos”.
