 El  nombre  laterita  fue  acuñado  por  primera  
vez  en  india  por  Francis  Buchanan-­‐Hamilton  
(fisico  escoces)  ,  en  un  reporte  del  año  1807.    
Laterita  proveine  de  una    palabra  La;na      
“letri;s”  que  significa  bricks.

Bauxite  is  the  most  important  aluminium  ore.  It  consists  

largely  of  the  minerals  gibbsite  Al(OH)3,  boehmite  γ-­‐AlO(OH),  
and  diaspore  α-­‐AlO(OH),  together  with  the  iron  oxides  goethite  
and  hema;te,  the  clay  mineral  kaolinite  and  small  amounts  of  
anatase  TiO2.  It  was  named  ager  the  village  Les  Baux  in  
southern  France,  where  it  was  first  discovered  by  the  geologist  
Pierre  Berthier.

Garnierite  is  a  mineral  composed  of  hydrous  nickel  silicates  a  member  of  the  serpen;ne  group  
with  formula:  (Ni,Mg)3Si2O5(OH).  Népouite  is  a  synonym.    
 
Garnierite  is  important  as  a  source  of  nickel  and  is  mined  from  laterite  deposits  which  are  
formed  by  intense  weathering  and  secondary  enrichment  of  ultramafic  igneous  rocks.
