JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH
Prelude, Fugue and Allegro
(BWV 998)
Guitar Transcription by
MICHAEL LORIMER
455Johann Sebastian Bach's large prelude in E
flat major, BWV 998, bears the title “Prelude
pour la Luth. 6 Cémbal. par J.S. Bach:? In the
Past, some scholars have expressed doubts that it is
@ complete composition, and even that it is by
Bach. Both doubts are easily laid to rest upon
examination of the autograph score: it is signed in
Bach’s hand “par [by] J.S. Bach;” and Bach writes
“Fin” at the end of the Allegro. On the basis of
watermark analysis and the character of Bach’s
script, the date of composition of BWV 998 has
recently been placed in the beginning to mid-
1740's, though it could conceivably be a revision
of another piece since lost. The late date is
substantiated by the da capo fugue, a rare form
that Bach used in a few other late compositions,
among them the C minor lute suite, BWV 997.
Because its range is confined to that of the
lute and because of its Iutenistic style (generally
slow-moving bass and relatively thin texture) it
seems to have been conceived as a lute composi
tion, but composed at the harpsichord, This im-
pression is also suggested by the alternative
instrumentation in Bach’s own hand: “Prelude for
the lute or harpsichord?’ It is very unlikely that the
work was composed at the lute, since there are
many awkward and uncomfortable fingerings that
never occur in the works of a lutenist such as
Silvius Weiss, for example, even though his
musical style is quite similar.
‘A facsimile of Bach’s autograph score for
BWV 998 is included with this edition. Grateful
acknowledgement is made to Ueno Gakuen Col-
lege, Tokyo, for permission to reproduce it. The
old Bach Gesellschaft edition, which contained a
few errors in the Allegro, has served as the basis
for most 20th-century editions of this piece. These
errors have now been corrected by referring to the
autograph version. In the Allegro, measure 87,
third sixteenth note is actually A flat, not A
natural, and in measure 90 the inner voices of the
two triads were missing and have been supplied in
this edition. The Bach Gesellschaft errors
apparently resulted from misreading of the Ger-
man organ tablature from measures 78 to 96 of the
Allegro; Bach had to resort to the use of this
tablature when pressed for space.
The policy in making this edition has been to
adhere to the spirit and style of the autograph and
make the work lie idiomatically on the guitar. Any
changes from Bach’s score are indicated. Basses
that have, been raised one octave appear with a
{ Editorial additions other than finger-
ings are enclosed in parentheses, and places where
any other departures occur are indicated by an
asterisk: *.
Two musical considerations that influence the
fingering of the present edition are the use of the
style brisé and the importance of consistent and
symmetrical metrical pulse in Bach's work. The
style brisé (broken chord style) came to its peak
with the French lutenists in the 17th century and
was copied by keyboard players throughout the
baroque period. In this style, chords are spun out
over several voices rather than presented as blocks,
and the notes are left to ring in all voices as long as
Possible, so that one harmony ‘‘melts” into the
next. The style brisé is a most idiomatic effect to
plucked string instruments and is a natural way of
enriching the sonority while producing an elegant,
subtle and varied texture. Thus, although appear
ing orthographically as one line, the Prélude is not
a single melody, but is a series of melodic
fragments and broken harmonies:
Harmony
Where this sort of writing appears in the Prélude,
Fugue and Allegro, the fingering in this edition is
intended to allow the individual voices of the
harmonies to ring as long as possible.
While the interpretation of baroque music
calls for flexibility in many areas, it does not allow
for flexibility in the area of metric pulse, The
maintenance of a clearly felt, symetrical pulse is
essential to the music (in groups of twos and fours
the pulse must always be strong-weak-strong-
weak, and in groups of threes the Pulse must
always be strong-weak-weak); otherwise the syn-
copations the composer has written, as well as
varieties of accent and articulation, will not be
heard. Thus, for example, throughout the Prélude
the pulse on the first of every three eighth notes
must be clearly felt so that the lilt and syncopation
of the ,4}) motive may always be heard. In
the Fugue and Allegro it must be observed that the
sixteenth notes always group in pairs (strong-
weak-strong-weak etc.); for example in a figure
such as the syncopation caused by the
Pitch accent will only be heard if the metric pulse
Cor is clearly felt.
When melodic notes come in pairs it is com-
mon in French music or French-influenced music
(as often in the case of J.S. Bach), to lengthen the
first note and shorten the second so that J)
is played more like J}J) . A beautiful effect isrr
produced when this convention (called notes in-
égales) is observed in performing the first section
of the Fugue. The running eighth notes starting in
measure three may be played with a light inequal-
ity which will give the lines a soft lilt, while for
contrast and expressiveness, the motive Ht
which first appears in measure eleven, may be
played with a more pronounced inequality, pro-
ducing a sighing effect.
In the Allegro, the use of a soft staccato will
help produce liveliness as well as good separation
of the parts. This technique is especially effective
when applied to the bass notes (i.e. played more
like (2{2f7 ). Such a staccato may be produced
by preparing the right hand fingers whenever
possible (thereby dampening notes that would ring
otherwise).
‘Trills are indicated «» . They must begin with
the upper note, and when indicated at cadences
trills are obligatory since they are an integral part
of the harmony.

Bach Gesellschaft provenaient apparemment
orgue utilisée dans les mesures 78 4 96 de l’Allegro;
souplesse ailleurs. I! doit maintenir un rythme net
fort-faible-faible). Par exemple, au cours du
Prélude entier, Vartiste doit s’efforcer d’accentuer
On

documento. La antigua edicion Back Gesellschaft,
tura musical elegante, sutil y variada. Asi, aunque

tocndolas mds bien ast: (Lf? _). Dicho staccato

Johann Sebastian Bachs grosses Praeludium
in Es-Dur BWV 998 tragt den Kopftitel “Prelude
pour la Luth, 0 Cémbal. par J.S. Bach?”
seither verschollenen Stiickes handeln konnte.'
c-moll Suite fir Laute, BWV 997.
Ausgabe hinzugefiigt. Der Irrtum der Bach-Gesell-
schaft stammt offensichtlich vom falschen Lesen
der deutschen Orgeltabulatur von Takt 78 bis 96
des Allegros; Bach musste diese Tabulatur aus
Platzmangel verwenden.

metrisch, pulsierenden Rhythmus in Bachs Werk.
Der style brisé (gebrochener Akkordstil) erreichte
seinen Hdhepunkt mit den franzésischen Laute-
nisten des 17. Jahrhunderts und wurde von
Spielern der Tasteninstrumente wahrend der
ganzen Barockperiode nachgeahmt. In diesem Stil
werden Akkorde in verschiedene Stimmen
ausgesponnen und nicht in Blockakkorden
dargeboten.
Saiteninstrumente.
Fugue beachtet. Die fortlaufenden Achtelnoten,
beginnend im dritten Takt, konnen durchweg mit
einer leichten Ungleichmassigkeit gespielt werden,
welche den Stimmen einen sanften Schwung ver-
Jeiht, wahrend — fir Kontrast un Ausdruck — das
Motiv , Welches zuerst im elften Takt auf-
tritt, mit einer starker betonten Ungleich-massigkeit_gespielt werden kann, was einen
seufzended Effekt erzeugt.
Im Allegro wird die Anwendung eines sanften
Stakkatos helfen, Lebhaftigkeit, sowie auch gute
‘Trennung der Teile zu erzielen. Diese Technik ist
besonders wirksam wenn sie auf den Bassnoten
angewandt wird (z.B. mehr wie (if?
gespielt). Solch ein Stakkato kann dadurch her-
vorgebracht werden, indem man die Finger der
rechten Hand, wenn immer moglich, vorbercitet.
Dadurch dimpft man Noten ab, die andernfalls
nachklingen wiirden.
