Sinopsis: El doctor Ariel ha fundado una institucin altruista cuya misin consiste en proporcionar
consuelo, ilusin y alegra a las personas desesperadas, carentes de dicha y de fe. A las oficinas de esta
extraa organizacin acude un da el anciano seor Balboa en busca de auxilio. l y su mujer criaron a
un nieto hurfano, a quien consintieron demasiado; sin embargo, siendo apenas un muchacho, es ya un
caso perdido: jugador, juerguista, agresivo y ladrn, que incluso roba a sus propios abuelos. Una noche,
tras sorprenderlo forzando el cajn del escritorio, el abuelo "aun dolindole en carne propia", lo echa de
la casa. De esto haca ya veinte aos; nunca regres. El muchacho se haba embarcado como polizn en
un carguero con destino a Canad, donde se haba vuelto contrabandista, estafador y mafioso, "un
canalla profesional". La abuela, que lo adora, no sabe nada de ello. Y para mantenerle la ilusin, el seor
Balboa le escribe peridicas cartas ficticias como si fueran del nieto, arrepentido ya, donde le cuenta la
vida provechosa y feliz que est llevando. Segn esto, tiene ttulo de arquitecto, viajes, xitos, fortuna;
adems, se ha casado con una muchacha encantadora.
As pasa el tiempo hasta que un da la abuela recibe un cablegrama donde el verdadero nieto, en realidad
un malhechor perseguido por la polica de varios pases, le anuncia su regreso a bordo del Saturnia. Pero
el barco naufraga y todos sus pasajeros perecen. La abuela ignora esta ltima noticia. El seor Balboa,
para continuar la farsa y no destruir el sueo de su esposa, quiere entonces que esa institucin le
proporcione un falso nieto, "el nieto de las cartas hermosas, el de la alegra y de la fe".
Los encargados de realizar esa misin son el propio director de la oficina, quien se har pasar por el
nieto Mauricio, e Isabel, joven que ha estado a punto de suicidarse y ha sido salvada por aquella
asociacin filantrpica. Ambos formarn la pareja del nieto y su esposa. Llegado el momento de
representar la farsa, preparada con extremo cuidado, sta es tan perfecta que convencen a la abuela.
Durante el desarrollo de la ficcin, sin embargo, el falso Mauricio e Isabel se enamoran. De todos
modos, la fingida visita toca a su fin y ambos se preparan a partir.
Ocurre entonces algo imprevisto. Aparece el verdadero nieto quien, para despistar a la polica, en vez de
viajar en el Saturna, lo hizo en otro barco, y llega exigiendo del abuelo una elevada suma de dinero, o
de lo contrario armar un escndalo. Balboa se niega. El Mauricio fingido le ordena marcharse. Todo se
realiza a espaldas de la abuela a quien desean ahorrar semejante decepcin.
Durante dos das consecutivos, de nada valen negativas, amenazas y splicas, pues aquel sinvergenza
se empea en extorsionar al abuelo. Pero la abuela logra sagazmente descubrir toda la verdad y,
decidida, se enfrenta a su nieto: "pero qu es lo que pretende insinuar? Que ese muchacho alegre y
feliz que est viviendo bajo mi techo no es mi nieto? Que el mo, verdadero, la ltima gota de mi
sangre, es este pobre canalla que est delante de m? Era eso lo que venas a decirme, Mauricio?" Y
ante el cinismo del nieto, reprime su dolor y lo echa de la casa.
Luego le tocar fingir a ella frente al simulado nieto Mauricio e Isabel, quienes se han ganado su cario,
manifestndoles que aquel desconocido se ha marchado sin decirle nada. Y confiesa a su esposo su
estado de nimo: "Que no me vean cada. Muerta por dentro, pero de pie. Como un rbol."
El teln cae lentamente mientras la abuela dicta a Isabel, sentada a sus pies, la receta de su licor
preferido y su pensamiento se pierde en una nueva ilusin: la esperanza de un hijo de sus nietos
adoptivos, verdaderos para ella, pues han tenido la virtud de endulzar y dar sentido a sus ltimos aos.
