NOUNS
Everything that exists on Earth is a
noun.
For example: chair,
table,
person, dog, etc. But we have
abstract nouns, too. For example: Love
(we can not see the noun but it exists).

COUNTABLE NOUNS
Countable nouns are those nouns that you can
count and have a singular and plural form.

To indicate that a countable noun exists we are

going to use THERE IS (singular) and THERE ARE
(plural).

COUNT NOUNS: THERE IS

We are going to use THERE IS for singular
nouns :
*Examples:
1. There is an orange on the table.
2. There isnt a ball under the chair.

3. A: Is there a sofa in the bedroom?

B: Yes, there is. / No, there isnt.

En los ejemplos anteriores puedes observar que There is

se us con el sustantivo en singular y con el artculo A (a
ball). Los artculos, para los sustantivos en singular, pueden
ser A (se usa con sustantivos que comiencen con sonido
consonntico) y AN (se
usa con sustantivos que
comiencen con sonido voclico). Examples:
a university
a chair
an orange
an hour
*Tambin podemos usar one (number 1) en lugar del
artculo A AN.
*There are se usa con sustantivos plurales y puedes usar
los nmeros a partir del 2 o algn cuantificador.

COUNT NOUNS: THERE ARE

THERE ARE is going to be used with plural
nouns:
1. There are two televisions in
the living - room.
2. There arent many students in
the classroom.
3. A: Are there any pens on the table?
B: Yes, there are. / No, there arent.
*There are se usa con sustantivos plurales y puedes
nmeros a partir del 2 o algn cuantificador.

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
Los sustantivos No Contables se caracterizan
por no tener forma plural, por lo cual siempre
se van a usar con THERE IS. Tampoco
podemos asumir que son singulares por lo que
no podemos usar el artculo A AN .

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
1. There is cake on the plate.
2. There is water in the glass.
3. There isnt food on the plate.

4. There isnt coffee in the cup.

5. A: Is there cheese in the refrigerator?

B: Yes, there is.

No, there isnt.

UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
Puedes observar que en los ejemplos anteriores no
usamos el artculo A AN ni el nmero uno, pero
podemos utilizar un cuantificador para indicar
simplemente que hay una determinada cantidad.
La estructura que hemos empleado es la misma de
los tiempos gramaticales anteriores.
Una oracin afirmativa empieza con THERE IS,
luego el cuantificador y el sustantivo con el
complemento si lo hubiera. En las oraciones negativas
slo se aade la palabra NOT despus de THERE IS y
la contraccin es THERE ISNT.

Ahora observa el siguiente ejemplo:
There are three cups of coffee on the table.

Fjate que usamos THERE ARE porque estamos

contando las tazas (sustantivo contable), mas, el
caf sigue siendo no contable.

HOW MUCH?
HOW MUCH is going to be used in Interrogative
sentences with Uncountable Nouns. Look at the
example:
A: How much oil is there?
B: There isnt any oil.

or

There are two bottles of oil.

There is some oil.

Nota que en las preguntas se usa THERE IS pero
al revs: IS THERE ya
que se
trata de
una
interrogacin.
Las respuestas
van
a
variar
de acuerdo al cuantificador que usemos
y a la cantidad que haya.

HOW MANY?
HOW MANY is going to be used in Interrogative
sentences with Plural Nouns. Look at the example:
A: How many cars are there?
B: There arent any cars.

or

There is one car.

There are five cars.

Nota que en las preguntas se va a usar
siempre THERE ARE pero al
revs: ARE
THERE ya que se trata de una interrogacin.
Las respuestas van a variar de acuerdo al
cuantificador que usemos y a la cantidad que haya.

SOME ANY
SOME y ANY son cuantificadores indefinidos.
SOME se usa en oraciones afirmativas con
los sustantivos No Contables y con los Contables
en su forma Plural. Examples:
1. There are some dogs in my house.

2. There is some beer in the glass.

ANY
ANY se usa en oraciones Negativas e Interrogativas con
los sustantivos No Contables y con los Contables en su forma Plural.
Example:
1. There isnt any sugar in the cup.
2. There arent any cats on the roof.
3. A: Are there any sweaters on my bed?

B: Yes, there are. / No, there arent.

4. A: Is there any orange juice in the refrigerator?

B: Yes, there is.

/
No, there isnt.

REMEMBER:
Hay cuantificadores que se usan con los sustantivos
contables y no contables.
Many se usa con sustantivos contables en plural, lo
mismo que How many.
Much se usa con los sustantivos no contables, lo mismo que
How much.
Revisa los sustantivos contables singulares y plurales
(cmo convertirlos a su forma plural).
Practica un poquito todos los das.
