Course Overview
Content Area
This Home Improvement Job Management course contains a series of increasingly
advancing content in the domain of Home Improvement Management. The content of the first
unit is designed for the widest audience spectrum, as it requires no prior knowledge in
construction management or other disciplines. Learners are introduced to basics of Home
Improvement Management, including the job lifecycle, and what are the responsibilities of the
Customer Engagement Manager, Sales, and Customer Service personnel throughout the job
lifecycle.
Instructional Goal
The goal of instruction is to accelerate the learning necessary to enable Inside Sales /
Customer Service and CEM resources to utilize the companys standard procedures to perform
all processes of their role independently and produce customer satisfaction ratings of five (5)
stars on a 1 to 5 scale in quality, customer service, and value for money, with a minimum 95%
success rate.
Instructional Objectives
The following is a list of instructional objectives used in this unit plan:
Given a scripted recording of a customer job scenario, the learner will be able to
document five key requirements gained from customers description of what is
needed to complete the job to their satisfaction and budget
Given the customer requirements, the learner will identify three appropriate
products with the desired quality and quantity needed to complete job to
customer satisfaction and budget
Given customer description, the learner will demonstrate the ability to translate
customer requirements into one rough sketch rendering to scale, using freehand
or drawing app, with at least 80 % accuracy.
Given the information from the previous lesson, the learners will develop a
comprehensive materials list spreadsheet, with at least ten materials, and estimate
quantities of each material needed to complete the job to customers satisfaction.
Given the materials list from the previous lesson, along with vendor price lists the
learner will demonstrate the ability to estimate the materials costs needed to meet
customer satisfaction and budget, by creating a materials estimate sheet with
totals within 10% of customers materials budget.
Given customer requirements, sketch rendering, and vendor labor price list, along
with video review of how to estimate labor, the learner will demonstrate the
ability to estimate labor type and costs needed to meet customer satisfaction and
budget, by creating a labor estimate sheet with totals within 10% of customers
labor budget.
Given customer requirements, materials cost estimates, labor cost estimates, and
company guidelines on contingency and profit margins, the learner will
demonstrate the ability to estimate total job price to meet customer satisfaction
and budget, by creating two estimates that can be presented to the customer.
Given customer requirements, job cost estimates, materials list and instructions
on company guidelines for schedule development, the learner will demonstrate
the ability to develop a job schedule with milestones and job completion date no
more than three weeks from start date.
Taking all artifacts developed from previous lessons, along with company
guidelines and templates for development of statement of work (SOW), the
learner will demonstrate the ability to develop the SOW to company specification
and customer satisfaction.
Given four customer change request scenarios, and company guidelines, the
learner will create four change request forms with estimates and schedule
adjustments.
Given two customer and personnel conflict scenarios, and company guidelines,
the learner will write explanation of the resolution process for each scenario, to
company specifications outlined in Human Resource Plan.
Given job status report, adjustments for change, and company billing template,
the learner will create one customer bill for work already completed, to the
specifications outlined in the SOW.
Audience
This instructional unit, is designed for Inside Sales / Customer Service and Customer
Engagement Managers (CEM) resources. Most of the Inside Sales / Customer Service and CEM
resources have some prior knowledge and skills in home improvement, where, based on
Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligence (Roblyer 2004), they used more of their spatial and
bodily kinesthetic intelligence in their daily work. This instructional unit will target the
Instructional Sequence
This 8.5-hour instructional set is divided into six (3) modules, delivered in 1 day, with
each module covering specific knowledge competencies in the area of home improvement
management. Each module has a series of lessons designed to develop and assess these
competencies. The modules are sequenced according to the process workflow followed by a
Customer Engagement Manager (CEM) when executing a typical job. Module 1, Overview and
Gathering / Documenting Customer Requirements, has three (4) lessons, Module 2, Develop
Costs and Schedule Estimates, has four (4) lessons, Module 3, Develop Statement of Work
(SOW), has 1 lesson. Each lesson follows five (5) steps: Step 1: Pre-instructional activities, Step
2: Content presentation, Step 3: Learner Participation, Step 4: Assessment, and Step 5: Followthrough activities.
Instructional Strategies
The instructional units were designed using a combination of Cognitivism and
Constructivism learning theories.
revealed that Inside Sales / Customer Service and CEM resources tend to be cognitive learners.
They prefer the use of explanation, demonstration, and examples in meaningful sequences to
stimulate learning and absorb information into short-term memory. Their prior knowledge and
skills helps them to organize and code the information for storage in long term memory, where it
can be used and applied in various scenarios. Some lessons use a Constructivism approach, that
are learner directed, requiring research of products that would best meet the customers
requirements and budget. In the lessons using Constructivism, learning is demonstrated when
the learner solves the problem, by choosing combination of products that bets fit the customers
requirements and budget. This is assessed using predefined rubrics.
Materials
The modules lessons are organized in a sequence that uses YouTube videos, normally
humorous, to gain the learners attention and activate prior knowledge. This is followed by
content presentation via lecture, YouTube videos and demonstration guided by PowerPoint

Assessments
At the end of each lesson, the learners are assessed formatively via written rubric, to determine
competencies mastered, or calculated results graded with an answer key. The course lessons are
designed to progressively build on and utilize skills learned in previous lessons. Assessments are
based on learners participating in simulated real-world customer interactions, documenting key
requirements, and performing calculations on spreadsheets to demonstrate mastery of key
competencies. The rubrics are designed and used to assess the learners documentation and
answer keys are used to assess the calculation results. Summative assessment is accomplished
via the shadowing of experienced employees, on the job, post classroom training.
