Vocabulario ingls Say o Tell?

Hoy vamos a recordar la diferencia entre say y tell.

Cundo debemos utilizar uno u otro? Es muy sencillo:
You say something to someone (Dices algo a alguien)
You tell someone something (Cuentas algo a alguien)
Say va seguido siempre de una oracin subordinada sustantiva, por
ejemplo:
He said that he was right
(l dijo que tena razn)
O de to, si va seguido de un complemento indirecto:
He said to his father that he was right
(l le dijo a su padre que tena razn)
Tell va seguido en ingls de un complemento directo o un pronombre:
Can you tell me who is right, please?
(Puedes decirme quin tiene la razn, por favor?)

SAY
1. A veces usamos to someone despus de say
Por ejemplo:
I said to him he was welcome to my birthday party but he said to me
that he was busy, so I saidto him that he could come later if he wanted
to.
(Le dije que se viniera a mi fiesta de cumpleaos, pero me dijo que
estaba ocupado, as que le dije que podra venir ms tarde si quera)

2. Usamos say con el estilo directo

Por ejemplo:
Paul said, Hi Julia! How are you?
Julia said, Well, Im having a birthday party tomorrow, would you like to
come?
Paul said, Im working tomorrow
Julia said, Oh, well you can come later if you want to

(-Hola Julia! Cmo ests? dijo Paul

-Bien, tengo una fiesta de cumpleaos maana, te gustara venir? dijo
Julia
-Trabajo maana dijo Paul
-Oh, bueno, puedes venir ms tarde si te apetece dijo Paul)

3. Ms ejemplos con say

Susan said she was tired.
(Susan dijo que estaba cansada)
Anthony says you found a new job. Congratulations!
(Anthony dice que has encontrado un trabajo nuevo, enhorabuena!)
James came to my house yesterday and said he loved me.
(James vino a mi casa ayer y dijo que me quera.)

TELL
1. Despus de tell va un complemento indirecto
Por ejemplo:
I told everyone it was time to go home
Le dije a todo el mundo que era hora de irse a casa.

2. Usamos tell para dar rdenes y consejos

utilizando la estructura: tell + complemento indirecto
+ infinitivo
Por ejemplo:
She told him to sit down but he told her he was not going to wait
Ella le dijo (a l) que se sentara, pero l le dijo (a ella) que no iba a
esperar.

3. Hay algunas expresiones fijas que siempre se

usan con tell, no con say
tell (someone) a story

tell (someone) a lie

tell (someone) the truth
tell the future
tell the time
tell a joke

Tania told Charlie, Turn off the TV now, I have to study
(Tania le dijo a Charlie: Apaga la TV ahora mismo, tengo que estudiar)
David told me that he found a new flat.
