Sumario

La biblioteca digital. La biblioteca ha sido a los libros lo que la escritura

fue a la memoria: la garante y custodia del saber. Hoy, sin embargo, el libro ha
mutado y ya no aspira a reposar en las bibliotecas sino a desmadejar sus contenidos en la Red. La digitalizacin del mundo parece ser, por fin, una realidad.
El conocimiento pierde cuerpo, deja de ser material y toda la tradicin cultural
moderna, construida a partir de la manipulacin de los medios impresos, se
transforma. En este contexto surge una nueva fenomenologa de la lectura a la
que le compete repensar el espacio tradicional de las bibliotecas.

Espacios sin papel. Si la edicin electrnica y la creciente difusin del

saber por los medios digitales amenazan con abocar al libro impreso a ser una
simple rareza para los coleccionistas, cabra pensar que el espacio convencional de las bibliotecas organizado desde y para los libros tambin corre el
riesgo de extinguirse. Sin embargo, pese a que sus funciones tradicionales de
almacenamiento tienden a desaparecer, otras dimensiones de su uso sociales
y representativas siguen gozando de buena salud. Los cambios, por otro
lado, no han sido an tan intensos como para alterar la concepcin tipolgica y
esttica de las bibliotecas. Seis ejemplos dos muy diferentes en Espaa, una
compacta pareja berlinesa y un do minimalista japons dan cuenta de este inacabado proceso de transformacin que sufren las bibliotecas contemporneas.

de los edificios hbridos multifuncionales, bien en la pequea de los humildes
pabellones que dialogan con una naturaleza casi virgen. Un texto crtico introductorio analiza este particular contexto; tres obras significativas lo ilustran.

Para terminar, con ocasin de los recientes acontecimientos acaecidos en

Japn un terremoto geolgico y en los pases rabes un terremoto poltico, Luis Fernndez-Galiano desvela la fragilidad de nuestras arquitecturas
materiales y sociales, poniendo de manifiesto cmo ambas crisis, sin embargo,
pueden apuntar creativamente a otros modelos de crecimiento ms sostenibles.

The Digital Library. The library has been to books what writing was
to memory: the guarantor and custodian of knowledge. Today, however, the
book has changed and no longer hopes to remain in libraries, but to unravel
its contents in the web. The digitalization of the world seems to be, finally, a
reality. Knowledge loses body, ceases to be material and all the modern cultural tradition, which has developed from the manipulation of printed matter, is
transformed. This context gives rise to a new phenomenology of reading, which
is awarded the task of rethinking the traditional space of libraries.

into collectors items, one would think that the conventional space of libraries
organized from and for books also runs the risk of become extinct. Nevertheless, although the traditional functions of storage tend to disappear, other
dimensions of their use social and representative continue to enjoy good
health. Changes, on the other hand, have not been intense enough so as to
alter the typological and aesthetic conception of libraries. Six examples two
very different ones in Spain, a compact Berlinese couple and a minimalist
Japanese duo take stock of this still unconcluded transformation process that
contemporary libraries are currently undergoing.

La biblioteca digital

Si el libro es una mquina para pensar, entonces las bibliotecas son fbricas
de pensamiento. Esas industrias intelectuales, sin embargo, se enfrentan en
nuestros das a la mutacin de sus herramientas, y el libro digital impulsa el
trnsito contemporneo de las bibliotecas desde el espacio arquitectnico
hacia el nodo informtico. La primera revolucin de la escritura, hace casi
dos milenios, sustituy el rollo por el cdice, y esa innovacin extraordinaria
de las pginas encuadernadas hizo posible el acceso cmodo y rpido a la
informacin depositada entre sus cubiertas; la segunda revolucin, hace algo
ms de medio milenio, reemplaz el manuscrito por la imprenta, y la
reproduccion mecnica facilit una multiplicacin espectacular de los textos;
la tercera, de la que nos ha tocado ser testigos, ha efectuado el trnsito del
impreso fsico a la informacin digital, y con ella una formidable explosin
de la disponibilidad y del acceso.
Del papiro al pergamino, del pergamino al papel y del papel al bit.
Recorriendo esta ruta, enseguida se advierte que la ltima metamorfosis tiene
una naturaleza distinta a las anteriores, porque al pasar del universo material
de los rollos, los cdices o los libros al mundo virtual de las redes las
necesidades espaciales de las bibliotecas convencionales se desvanecen.
Desde el mundo clsico hasta el siglo XX, las bibliotecas han sido a la vez
depsitos de manuscritos o impresos y lugares para su consulta, pero ni los
unos ni los otros parecen ya imprescindibles: tanto los almacenes como las
salas de lectura sern nos dicen progresivamente reemplazados por los
archivos informticos y las pantallas individuales, haciendo innecesarios los
edificios especficos y convirtiendo las actuales bibliotecas en arquitecturas
prescindibles, fsiles construidos de una era de la informacin periclitada de
forma definitiva. Es ese su destino?
Por ms que las tribulaciones de editores o libreros dibujen los perfiles de
un paisaje de crisis, las bibliotecas tienen todava esperanzas fundadas de
supervivencia, como atestigua la adaptacin de las grandes instituciones a las
demandas de la red que han sabido hacer compatibles con sus funciones
tradicionales, as como la profusin y popularidad de las de menor escala,
convertidas en centros sociales que ofrecen a jvenes y ancianos comodidad
y silencio, adems de libros, revistas o conexiones de internet. Al cabo, los
seres humanos gustamos del encuentro, y ni el teletrabajo puede sustituir la
vitalidad interactiva de la oficina, ni la lectura en pantallas dispersas puede
reemplazar el contacto informal en los centros de investigacin, los lugares
de enseanza o las bibliotecas. Al igual que la educacin a distancia no hizo
desaparecer la llamada presencial, la biblioteca a distancia tampoco har
obsoleta nuestra biblioteca material.

If a book is a machine for thinking, then libraries

are thought factories. The tools of these intellectual
industries, however, are undergoing a complete
transformation in these days, and the digital book
triggers the contemporary transition of libraries
from architectural space to the computer node.
The first revolution of writing, almost two thousand
years ago, replaced the roll by the codex, and the
extraordinary innovation of bound pages enabled
a comfortable and fast access to the information
enclosed between its covers; the second revolution,
more than five hundred years ago, replaced the
manuscript with printing, and mechanical
reproduction led to a spectacular multiplication
of texts; the third, which we are now witnessing,
has spurred a transition from printed matter to
digital information, and with it a huge explosion
of availability and access.
From papyrus to parchment, from parchment to
paper and from paper to bytes. Covering this route
one soon sees that the last metamorphosis is rather
different than the previous one, because when
passing from the material universe of rolls, codices
or books to the virtual world of networks the spatial
needs of conventional libraries fade away. From the
classical world to the 20th century, libraries have
been at once deposits for manuscripts or printed
matter and places in which to study them, but neither
one nor the other seem essential nowadays: both
storage areas and reading halls will be most seem
to think progessively replaced by computer files
and individual screens, thereby making specific
buildings unncessary and rendering our beloved
libraries superfluous architectures, built fossiles of
an information age that is reaching its demise.
Is that indeed their fate?
Even though the present troubles of booksellers
and editors may describe a landscape of crisis,
libraries still have justified hopes for survival, as
evidenced by the adaptation of large institutions to
the webs demands which they have managed to
make compatible with their traditional functions ,
as well as by the profusion and popularity of the
smaller ones, transformed into social centers that,
besides offering books, magazines or internet
connection, provide comfortable and quiet premises
for the young and the elderly. After all, human
beings like getting together, and working from home
cannot replace the interactive vitality of an office,
nor can reading on lonely screens replace the casual
contact in research centers, universities or libraries.
Just like distance learning did not make classrooms
disappear, the virtual library will not entail the final
extinction of our resilient material library.
