TOWING AND TAXTING
Towing ~ General
‘A. Provision is made on the nose gear for installing a tow bar for
towing aircraft fwd and aft. A shear pin 1s incorporated in the tow
bar, to avoid overloading the nose gear. It is reconmended that tow
bar P/N 01-909-03-00 be used when towing aircraft. A nose wheel
towing handle is supplied and should be carried onboard the aircraft.
When moving the aircraft over soft or muddy ground end for
extracting the aircraft from mud, the main gear has provisions for
attaching a tow harness. While using the tow harness, the nose wheel
ds guided by the towing handle. (Refer to Chapter 12 for special
tools and equipment.) hs
CAUTION: 1. DO NOT TOW AIRCRAFT BY ATTACHING A ROPE TO THE NOSE
GEAR STRUT.
2. DO NOT USE BOLT OR ANY OTHER PIN ON TOW BAR INSTEAD OF
THE ORIGINAL SHEAR PIN.
B. There is no restriction for forward or reverse towing. The aircraft
can be towed at any angle of turn (360°) provided the nose gear
torque links are disconnected. Before towing, perform the following:
(1) Ensure that there is sufficient hydraulic pressure available
(2) Disengage nose geat torque links.
(G3) Attach tow bar to attach points on nose gear.
(4) Ensure that all doors are closed.
NOTE: When moving the aircraft by hand, the nose gear torque links
"Go not have to be disengaged: however, the maximum turning
angle is limited to 50° in each direction.
CAUTION: NEVER PUSH AIRCRAFT AT WING STRUTS OR ANY OTHER SURFACE
MARKED NO PUSH. ATRCRAFT SHOULD BE HAND PUSHED AT WHEELS

c. For Extracting Aircraft Sunk in Mud ee
(1) On main landing gear (Ref 32-40-00, Fig. 209) withdraw and
reverse towing adaptor (P/N 207-030-00) or remove plastic cap
and install adaptor with holding pin (P/M MS17987-C512).
(2) Attach cable harness to towing adaptor.
(3) Disengage nose gear torque Links and attach towing handle.
(4) Tow afreraft, at main gear, while steering nose wheel with
towing handle-
Taxing ~ General
Taxi aircraft at engine idle rpm only. When the engine blast area is
clear, apply power to start taxi roll. and perform the following:

A. Release brakes.
B. Taxi forward a few feet and apply brakes to determine brake
effectiveness.
While taxiing, make slight turns to determine that nose wheel
steering systen is operating properly.
NOTE: Use engine power levers as required, from FORWARD thrust to
REVERSE. When standing still, use IDLE position (out of beta).
Monitor operating temperatures.
