Students will learn to read Sick, by Shel Silverstein, fluently (with comfort, expression, correct
pronunciation of all words, and appropriate pauses for punctuation) and get involved in Poetry as
a genre of literature.

Details of the Unit
Previous skills
Previous knowledge:
The students should know how to work with computer, and have a previous knowledge related to some health
problems.

Procedures
Teacher sets some pictures on the wall to activate students previous knowledge related to some
health problems.
The teacher has the materials needed to develop the lesson.
The teacher motivates the students to participate actively in the activities and use the English
language all the time in and out the classroom.
Students are asked to sit in circle all around the classroom and the teacher gives each one of them
a handout to do the activity by asking questions and giving answers :
-How do you feel when you are sick? What are your symptoms?
-What do you do when you are sick? (Miss school, stay in bed, watch television, etc.)
-Does it make you feel worse when you KNOW you are missing something fun when you are
sick?
-Do you ever say you are sick when you might not actually be sick?
In pairs, students TURN and TALK and take turns to do the activity. After turn and talk, the
teacher will ask students to share their responses. The teacher will call on a student quietly
raising their hand. As students are responding, the teacher will re-word their responses as needed.
The students should have background knowledge, talking about health problems.
Content development
-Teacher asks students to form group of four and pay attention carefully.

- Teacher shows a big picture of a sick boy on one side of the board and asks the students to
brainstorm their ideas while she is writing down the words.
Activity 1: Questions and answers
The teacher read each one of the questions and the students give their answers.
How do you feel when you are sick?
What symptoms do you have?
What do you do when you are sick?

Activity 2: Reading and Building Vocabulary
Read the poem Sick by Shel Silverstein. Underline the new words you find when you are
reading. Make a vocabulary about 15 words and illustrate them. It should be done in your
notebook.
Activity # 3: Find someone who
Go around the classroom and ask as many classmates as they can if they got any of the listed
sicknesses, just write the name of the person who answers yes

Activity # 4: Main Ideas
Instructions: Read the poem again and complete the graphic organizer.
Activity # 5: Chroral Reading
Make groups of 4 students to read the poem in chorus. Then, read and check the criteria in the given rubric.

material. Whenever there is an oral activity the students are asked to illustrate the
