THE NATURE OF LANGUAGE

I. Read the sentences. Each sentence is related to the ideas of one of the authors in the box.
Write their names next to the sentence.

a. Language is a means restricted to humans, culturally transmitted, acquired, and brought about a
social group over generations. Speakers used it for conveying feelings, emotions, etc.

b. A number of phrases form language. The way this set is organized reveals how the grammar of
the language is structured.

c. A system of signs that are interconnected form language. The function of one sign is necessary
to the function of the rest of them.

d. Humans manipulate sounds according to the meaning they want to express. The production of
sound becomes the stimuli that provokes responses. All of this is identified as use or a speech
act.
