Politics has always been a subject of interest for Latinos. Let it be in United States or in our countries of origin, the political theme brings people together to talk, exchange opinions and re-evaluate our values. We begin this Fall season with a re-elected President. Many Latinos had their voices heard; let it be in favor of our elected President Obama or voting for the other candidate, Mitt Romney. The good thing is that Hispanic voices were heard loud and clear in our US political history. I invite you to read various articles in this publication so that you can be kept abreast and so that as Hispanics we would continue to maintain a strong voice in our great nation. On another hand, in this country we celebrate Thanksgiving Day. We hope that families will unite and take a minute to put any differences aside, including any political ones. Our warmth has always made us stand as Latinos; that we are people who give to others, that we hug and embrace and eat in harmony. Lets look for opportunities to invite others who may be lonely and lets offer them a meal prepared with love. Take advantage of the turkey stuffing recipe and let us know if you enjoyed it. The Holiday season is here! Happy Thanksgiving! Raquel

Originally from Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Sandra Quinones learned at an early age the importance of a good education. Sandra explains that her dad, Arturo Quiones, was the first in his family to graduate from college. His education gave him the opportunity to work in a naval base on the island. Thus, Sandra was able to attend the Naval Base School Roosevelt Roads in the town of Ceiba, PR. With an imperative desire to continue her university vocation, she received a nomination from her Social Studies teacher to receive the Xerox Award for Social Sciences and Humanities scholarship. The grant was awarded to study at the University of Rochester, something her father did not support. At the time, he wanted his only daughter to continue her educational career in Puerto Rico. Even without his blessing, Sandra takes flight and began her collegiate studies at the University of Rochester. Sandra recounts with great eagerness,
the first time I visited the school was during winter and very cold, but I felt the warmth of the people. As destiny would have it, she decided to make Rochester her home. Today, with hard work and dedication she has a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction at the University of Rochester. Such an achievement, states Sandra, allowed me to devote the two phases that I love most, learning and working with students. In her work as a professor, she engages in course preparation, research, analysis, thesis review, and meeting with students. Sandra reiterates that she has been able to witness the power and potential of our Latino students at an elementary and college level. Similarly, she has witnessed the challenges that exist in our Rochester Latino community. Issues such as a low graduation rate, family instability, and health factors among others. When asked, what should parents do to ensure that their
children succeed academically; Sandra tells us that parents need to become more involved in their childrens lives to really know whats going on. They need to have their parents advocate for them, meet with their teachers, attend school activities, and request assistance if your child is having difficulty. Sandra adds that the Latino community in Rochester is very fortunate because it has organizations like the Ibero American Action League and Latinas Unidas, among other agencies that are here to assist the community. In her spare time, she is devoted to another one of her passions; cycling. She takes part in Bike MS, where she participates in long distance cycling as a fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In addition to cycling, her other hobbies include running, kickboxing, dancing, and developing her culinary skills with the Food Network.
Fortunately, Mr. Arturo Quiones is super proud of his daughters accomplishments. Her mother, Mrs. Carmen Rosado, is just as happy for her they have a great bond because she is the only female (she has 3 older brothers). In the upcoming year, Sandra will be taking on the position of Interim Director of Urban Teaching and Leadership Program (UTL). Once her contract expires, she hopes to gain the opportunity to embark as an education consultant. Whatever her endeavor may be, we are assured that with her intelligence, leadership, and persistence; she will always give her best.

Many years ago, when books were printed with seals and were sewn by hand, there lived a boy named Juan Andrs who wanted to be like his grandfather Julin. The grandfather had a fascination for books, and his library was the most famous of the entire city.

Juan Andrs also felt a particular love for books, c-a-b-l-i-o-t-i-e-b especially for the ones of his grandfather. But for Juan Andrs, more than work, it seemed like a game. His grandfathers house was transformed. There were books scattered here, there and everywhere. Every room, every piece of furniture, each place, each corner of the house was full of them. Juan Andrs was so busy that no one ever heard him say: Im bored or I dont know what to do. The 730 days came to their end. The grandfather asked Juan Andrs what he had learned from the books during that whole time. Juan Andrs told him that during those two years he had not stopped reading one single day. That each time that he had a book between his hands he not only read, but he could live many lives, travel to many unusual places, meet different people and discover new animals. Now it is time to use colored pencils, crayons, paper, joy, and all of your imagination to start your own book. Best of all is that you are the author of your own stories.
The grandfather thought the idea was marvelous. Happy imagination! But both of them wanted to make something more than a library. His library would also teach Marcela all of the readers how to create a book, how to illustrate it and how to print it. If someone didnt know how to read, they would teach them how. Creating the library took time and a whole lot of dedication. Now, in the city, after many, many years, almost

literary Cafe and Mario Vargas Llosa in The City and the Dogs
By Diana Casais transported back to the sixties in affected Peruvian society of that time Peru to read the first novel with with The City and the Dogs (1961). This This month, the Literary Caf was which Mario Vargas Llosa (born 1936) writer allowed us to get to know parts of his life through this work that was projected onto various characters who allowed us to see his own questionings. Thanks to this novel, we were able to explore Peru with its military school Leoncio Prado as an alternative in order to convert young people into real men. Upon questioning the members of El Cafecito Literario about military education in their countries, all were in agreement with the idea that this type of system represses any kind of emotional and individual expression by considering it inappropriate for masculinity. The idea of forming a society in which human qualities belong exclusively to one gender can cause great identity conflicts, like in many of the characters of this novel. Its characters reflect a great necessity of affection that they propose to reach through gaining prestige. However, three of the main characters show themselves attracted by the need to be loved by Teresa, a simple and careful girl. Femininity is presented as a condition that drives women to accept all kinds of abuses inside a patriarchal society. Without a doubt this writer revealed to us his youthful worries and he was able to show us the intra-couple conflicts of his parents, as a sample of the society of that time, even though these things still keep forming part of this time period. El Serrano was a character who represented the indigenous character whom the group considered predestined to fail and therefore the most discriminated against within the elitist Peruvian society. We saw with
sadness that racism is an evil that appears also in Hispanic communities. Some Peruvian members of the Literary Caf confirmed that this racism is very common in that country but nevertheless theyve seen that when people with fewer indigenous physical traits emigrate to European countries, they still end up feeling as segregated as el Serrano. However, they declared that work and intellectual qualities have been the factors that have re-installed them socially in any community without any kind of racial prejudice mattering much. We found the student environment of The City and the Dogs to be hostile and plagued by intimidation on the part of authority figures, which served as a model to young people to collude and dominate the weakest ones at any price. Upon reading this novel, we wanted to suppose that bullying was a problem that happened in the past in the military school Leoncio Prado, but it was not so. The most alarming thing was when one of our members shared an article from the newspaper La Repubica PE (8-21-2012), where strong accusations are made against teachers of that same school of mistreatment of students who then themselves are incited to mistreat their weaker classmates. The City and the Dogs invited us without a doubt to re-adjust our perception of the world and to question the mental health of those teachers capable of humiliating their students while shielding themselves in their role as educators. Could it be the example of the adults, which exhorts the newest generations to be intimidating, in order to get power in society?

Mixed Families
By Evelyn Cassano A few months ago I started dating an Italian American and in many of our conversations the taboo topic came out: if we have kids what will be our kids ethnicity in USA society? Hispanic or Caucasian? In an arrogant tone, I told him: When you are born in the United States of America or become a US citizen through naturalization that automatically makes you an American. I immediately gave him the following example. When you are born in Panama you are Panamanian, when you are born in Colombia, you are Colombian, and when you are born in Cuba, you are Cuban; nevertheless, when you are born in the US you are either a Latino or Hispanic? It doesnt make sense to me. I told him: We need to stop labeling ourselves; instead, we must try to achieve equality, tolerance and unity in this country and call ourselves American. After that conversation, something inside of me wasnt settled and I began to reflect upon my roots and origin. I got the best advice from my friend Emilio: America is an ethnic melting pot; everyone who is born here has family (parents, grandparents, greatgrandparents) who were born in other countries, except for the Native Americans. Emilio feels that calling ourselves Latinos/Hispanics honors our families and our heritage, whereas calling ourselves Americans honors only our great country and immigration (which is a good thing) but it is an incomplete description of who we are. Emilio was born in the U.S.A. but his parents and family are from El Salvador; his wifes family comes from Italy. He said: If you are born in Panama but your entire family is Indian and lives in India or USA, does that make you Panamanian or Latino? Not really he said- although you could adapt and learn the language and the culture. However, the blood that runs through your veins, your genotype, your genes and your family, all share the DNA and traits from whatever country your family is originally from. After a long conversation with Emilio, my horizons expanded and I now have a better understanding. My opinion is that we are who we are regardless of what we call ourselves. If your family or ancestors came from Latin-America or the Caribbean you are and will always be Latino. Another important point learned is that we shouldnt forget that there are social, racial, ethnic divisions and power struggles in United States and in the world. Emilio explained that is why defining ourselves as Latinos or Hispanics is important because our numbers will demand a fairer distribution of power in our government, schools, corporations, and funding programs in our communities. This article reflects only my point of view; if you would like to read the standards for the Classification of Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity go to the White House link at: http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/ fedreg_race-ethnicity
