Introduction to Wireless LANs

A wireless LAN (or WLAN, for wireless local area network, sometimes referred to as LAWN, for local area wireless network) is one in which a mobile user can connect to a local area network LAN through a wireless (radio) connection. The IEEE 802.11 group of standards specify the technologies for wireless LANs. 802.11 standards use the Ethernet
Peer-to-Peer or ad-hoc wireless LAN

An ad-hoc network is a network where stations communicate only peer to peer (P2P).

OPERATING MODES
Infrastructure Mode Infrastructure Mode consists of at least one Access Point connected to the Distribution System.

Main Analyzed Points

Cost Effectiveness Safe & Security Efficiency Helpful for the Students & Faculties.

Cost Effectiveness
It is easier to add or move workstations. It is easier to provide connectivity in areas where it is difficult to lay cable. Installation is fast and easy, and it can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings. In historic buildings where traditional cabling would compromise the faade, a WLAN can avoid the need to drill holes in walls. Long-term cost benefits can be found in dynamic environments requiring frequent moves and changes.

Safe & Secure

As this topology is being analysed to be implemented at the college level which yields a kind of MEDUIM scale of security level, WLAN satisfies the security level upto the Meduim. Thus we can be Safe, Secure & Sure

Efficient
Access to the network can be from anywhere within range of an access point. Portable or semipermanent buildings can be connected using a WLAN. When a facility is located on more than one site (such as on two sides of a road), a directional antenna can be used to avoid digging trenches under roads to connect the sites. Result of researches shows that wireless technologies have a direct impact on productivity.

To hook up to the network, you only need to open your laptop and push button to enable the wireless network.

Students Point of View

One of the best example of benefit of student is they can be connected to both library databases, & he can issue book from any of the libraries.

Components
Wireless NIC (Station)
PCMCIA cards are most common. PCI adapters are in fact PCMCIA converters.

Access Point (AP)

Equivalent to a HUB. Provide connectivity between Wired LANs and Wireless LANs. (bridging)

WLAN Pros and Cons

No wiring hassles. Per-node wiring cost is nil. Allows for true mobility and roaming. Low cost point-topoint links if line-ofsight available. Data rate restricted.
11 Mbps 802.11b 54 Mbps 802.11a

Security concerns. Expensive.
