Hug Both version of the definition item type have the advantage of being highly economical in terms both of the number of items that can be included on a printed page and of the number of problems that can be answered in a short period of testing time

Although requiring somewhat more space on the printed page and more time to answer, the above item type has the advantage placing the problem words in a contextual setting, a procedure felt by many to provide a better measure of candidates ability actually to use the test words actively in a real-life situation.
3. Paraphrase ( multiple-choice). A third method of testing vocabulary, combining elements of two of the previously discussed devices, is to underline a word in context and provide several possible meanings. Example: John was astounded to hear her answer. A. Greatly amused B. Greatly relieved C. Greatly surprised D. Greatly angered
The advantage of this item type is, as with type 2, that it puts the test words in a context. Its chief disadvantages are that it allows the testing of only one problem word per item
4. Paraphrase (supply type) A variation of type three, requiring a structured short answer supplied by the examinee, is highly useful in informal classroom testing.
5. Pictures (objective) In testing of children who have not yet reached the reading stage, vocabulary may be measure with pictures. Two types of picture items have frequently been used. In the first type, the examiner pronounces the name of an object and asks the child to indicate, by pointing or making a

deliberately
emphasis,
exaggerated
purposes
illustrates a common tendency of some less experienced item writers. Excessive trickiness is simply not necessary in language testing,
