WORK STUDY

Methods engineering includes work simplification, job design, value analysis and the like. Work study method was developed to improve performance of a given work. Work study is the body of knowledge concerned with analysis of thework methods and the standard of proposed work methods.

OBJECTIVES OF WORK STYDY

1.To analyse the present method of doing a job, systematically in order to develop a new and better method 2.To measure the work content of a job by measuring the time required to do the job for a qualified worker and hence to establish standard time. 3.To increase the productivity at minimum cost. 4. to improve operational efficiency

BASIC WORK STUDY PROCEDURE

1.Select the job or the process or the operation to be studied. 2. Record all relevant facts about the job or process. 3. Examine critically all the recorded facts. 4. Develop the new method for the job/process/operation. 5. Measure the work content and establish the standard time. 6. Define the new method for the job/process/operation. 7. Install the new method. 8. Maintain the new method.

Prime objectives of method study is to eliminate wasteful and inefficient motions. To study the existing method Develop improved method Work simplification Better product quality Better material handling Better working conditions

Motion study
Motion study is the science of eliminating wastefulness resulting from using unnecessary, ill-directed and inefficient motion. The aim of motion study is to find and perpetuate the scheme of least waste methods of labour.

Micro motion study

It is a valuable technique for making minute analysis of those operations that are short in cycle. Micro motions are THERBLIGS

Memomotion study
Developed by mundal. It is a special form of micro-motion study Multi-man and machine relationship

Work measurement
Measuring the work content of any activity under study. Definition work measurement is defined as the application of techniques designed to establish the work content of a specified task by determining the time required for carrying out the task at a defined standard of performance by a qualified worker.

OBJECTIVES OF WORK MEAURESMENT

Improved planning and control of activities More efficient manning of the plan Reliable indices for labour performance; Reliable basis for labour cost control; Basis for sound incentive schemes.

Techniques of Work Measurement

The main techniques used to measure work are: Direct Time Study-centiminute stop watch Synthesis Method Analytical Estimating Pre determined Motion Time System(PMTS) Work sampling or Activity Sampling or Radio Delay Method

PRODUCTIVITY AND EMPLOYEES

Productivity: The amount of goods and services produced with resources used Formula: Quantity of goods and Productivity = services produced Amount of Resources used

MEASURING PRODUCTIVITY

Partial productivity: Output in a given period divided by labour hours used in the period Formula:
Output in a given period

1.Partial productivity = Labour hours used in the period Output in a given period 2.Total productivity = Labour+Capital+Materials+Energy used in the same period

LABOUR PRODUCTIVITY
There are atleast three ways of measuring labour productivity Output per man-hour Output Labour productivity = Man-hours used Labours hours per unit of Output Total labour hours used Labour productivity = Ouput Added value per unit of labour cost Added value for the product Labour productivity = Total wages
