Skill is the core of the teaching process Teachers must master the instructional materials and strategies how to explain them effectively and understandable Explaining skill is an oral skill in presenting the information about a thing, situation, fact, or data systematically. The explanation can be given by the teacher to the student, by the student to the teacher or by student to the others.
We
may say: I explain the students about my experience on a tour to Bali. I explain them about the beauty of the island, the hospitality of the people, the culture and the famous dancing. another time, I explain my students why the heavy plane can fly?
At
On the first instant, I took them or I have experienced on tour to Bali. At the second explanation I analyzed and organized the relationship between one thing to another between the cause and effect, between a known thing and unknown thing. And between the role or definition and the example in the daily life.
To guide the students understanding clearly on their question or on the teachers question. To help the students to comprehend rules and principles. To involve student paticipation in answering question or solving problem. To get the feed back about the students understanding. To help the student to find out evidence of their understanding.
Explaining in Class
There are three aspects those have close relationship between one to another namely: 1. The explainer (the teacher) 2. The audience, the listener (the students) 3. The materials to be discussed. The students need explanation when they face something they have not experienced before. The function of the explanation here is to relate the new condition/situation with the previous one. The explanation should be in line with the students level understanding.
2. 3.
4. 5.
Explanation can be given at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end. And it can be combined with question and answer. Explanation should be relevant with the teaching objective. The teacher can make explanation about the planned question or question from the students. The material to be explained should be meaningful for the students. Explanation should be relevant with the students background and ability.
Presenting the explanation 1. Clearness 2. The language used should be appropriate with the students level of knowledge 3. Giving illustration and example. Use inductive or deductive in explaining, in inductive we give examples then based on the example we give the rules. In deductive way we formulate the rule and we give the example.
4. By Stressing By using variation in teaching style we stress the voice on important point. By making the structure of presentation: - By making summary before, during and after the explanation. - By rephrasing students answer (to state the students answer in the other way) - By giving spoken sign, such as: the first, the second, and so on, there are namely, etc - Feedback. To give the opportunity to the student to show his understadning by giving question. Based on the feedback the teacher can re-explain the materials in other/simpler way.
