Definition
A data warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant, and nonvolatile collection of data in support of managements decision-making process.W. H. Inmon

It contains data from the operational sources in an organization

(such as SAP, CRM, ERP system).

DW is a repository of information gathered from multiple sources,

stored at a single site.

DW provide the user a single consolidated interface to data, making

decision support queries easier to write.

DW holds business intelligence for the enterprise.

DW and KM
OS deals with transactional data. DWs deal with transferring this data for analysis and decision

making.
Knowledge is actionable information KM deal with providing the knowledge to use the right

information at the right time and at the right place.

Eg: a document giving reasons for sales drop.

Contd..
A KMS stores all such knowledge in a knowledge repository,

also called Knowledge Warehouse.

Knowledge obtained from KMS can provide context to the

information received from DW to understand fully.

DW and KM

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP):

It has a central database as its hub, allowing

applications to share and reuse data more efficiently than previously permitted by separate applications.
ERP software attempts to link all internal company

processes into a common set of applications.

It integrates different functional areas of an entire

organization like Marketing and Sales; Production and Operations (Materials Management, Inventory, etc.); Accounting and Finance; Human Resources.

ERP (contd)
An integrated system that operates in real time (or

next to real time), without relying on periodic updates.

The purpose is to facilitate the flow of information

between all business functions inside the boundaries of the organization and manage the connections to outside stakeholders.

DW and ERP
An ERP package supports every phase of the day-to-

day of an enterprise.
Though large collection of cleansed, transformed and

integrated data are provided by ERP, it may not be suitable for strategic information.
ERP data repositories lack data from external sources.
We can integrate ERP and DW.

DW and CRM
CRM Stands for Customer Relationship Management. It is defined as,

A widely implemented strategy for managing companys interactions with customers, clients and sales prospects.
It involves use of technology to organize, automate,

and synchronize business processes.

Thus DW plays an important role in implementing

CRM.

Why CRM ?
Cut throat competition forces companies to pay much attention on customers. Marketing is becoming one-to-one instead of oneto-many. In order to maintain an intimate relationship with

the customer, systems known as CRM-systems are available.

12

Role Of DW in CRM
Data Warehouse stores very large amount of data related

to customers and daily transactions.

It then uses Data Mining tools to extract relevant

information,
which helps in knowing how the customer will behave in

order to facilitate strategic decision making.

CRM READY DW
It Contains the details of every transactions at every

touchpoint with each customer.

This means that every unit of every sale ,every product

to every customer must be gathered in the data warehouse repository.

Atomic or detailed data provides maximum flexibility

to CRM Ready DW.

Challenges in CRM Ready DW.

Making Data warehouse CRM Ready will increase the data

volumes tremendously.
Today s technology facilitates large volume of atomic data

to be placed across multiple storage management devices that can be ceased through common data ware house tools.
For Customer related data cleansing and transformation

functions are more evolved and complex.

Thus traditional DW tols are not quite suited for the

specialized requirements of customer focused applications.

Active DW
It is the concept used in Data warehousing where data

warehouse is opened to users like employees, customers and suppliers worldwide.

Data warehouse then become mission critical instead

of remaining strategic only, which is then called as Active Data Warehousing.

Advantage:

It provides One to One Service customers and Business Partners by allowing them to use it according to their requirements.
