COST ANALYSIS OF CONCRETE ROADS IN MUMBAI

PRESENTED BY, ALOK KUMAR SINGH ROLL NO:-08 CE-(A)

Roads are important part of any city. Unless they are in healthy condition, the city cannot function properly. This paper highlights benefits of cement concrete roads and presents a life-cycle cost analysis based on experience of working in Mumbai city.

The original island of Mumbai was only 24 km long and 4 km wide from Dongri to Malabar Hill. Due to low maintenance cost and other advantages Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority have plans for concertizing the entire major road network in the Mumbai Metropolitan area.

The total road length in Mumbai is about 2000 KM, comprising of 1950 km of BMC maintained roads and 50 km of state highways. The first concrete road in Mumbai was Marine Drive constructed in the year 1939. These roads are of two kinds, namely 1.Rigid pavements.
2.Flexible pavements. Here we determine the cost analysis for these two types of roads.

Cost estimate

Initial cost of flexible pavement=Rs. 66 lakhs/Km Initial cost of rigid pavement=Rs. 98 lakhs/km Initial cost of rigid pavement using 30 % fly ash for replacing of cement=Rs. 91 lakhs/km Annual maintenance cost for flexible pavement =Rs. 0.25 lakhs/km Renewal of wearing course of flexible pavement every 5 years=Rs. 12.00 lakhs/km Strengthening of road every 10 and 20 years =Rs. 14.00 lakhs/ km Renewal of wearing course of flexible pavement every 5,10,15 and 20 years,= Rs. 12.00 lakhs/km Total = Rs. 26 lakhs

Saves fuel Long life Gain in traffic speed Resistant to weather and oil spills Economical Environmental friendly

Initially cost of construction is very high. However ,with the price of bitumen going up steadily, and the use of fly ash in making concrete mixes for pavements the relative cost of these two types of pavements could become quiet comparable.

Based on the above life cycle cost analysis, Net Present Value (NPV) of flexible pavement will be about 1.17 % higher than the rigid pavement after 20 years. Life of concrete pavement will be more than 40 years, hence concrete pavement will further serve for another 20 years with nominal maintenance.
