From each, according to his ability, to each according to his need. the phrases that crystallize the meaning of communism. isnt easy to get an unbiased definition of communism, one of the better ones describes it as socialism that abolishes private ownership and seeks to create a classless society.

Form of government/living where ideally there are no classes, there is no private ownership of property as all things are considered to belong to the community. Political way of thinking and An idea of how society should work and be organized. a kind of socialism that says that there should not be social classes or states. says that the people of any and every place in the world should all own the tools, factories, and farms that are used to produce goods and food.

Communist states referred to themselves not as communist, but rather socialist. Communism was the long-term objective to be attained in the distant, unspecified future, at the peak of historical evolution. Most importantly, exploitation and alienation were going to be eliminated. Under these conditions, the conflict between individual and society, or private and public interests, was also supposed to disappear.

Twenty years ago the Berlin Wall fell, marking the collapse of Soviet communism. Over time communism created a deep disillusionment and revulsion among those who lived under it. The diminished sense of legitimacy of the ruling elite in the Soviet Union and Soviet bloc countries contributed to the unraveling of those systems as well.

The failure of the communi st system was not merely economi c and political; it was a moral failure as well.

o Communism sounds like a good idea. In the purest form of communism, all people hold all land, factories and so on in trust, as it were. In this way, all goods are shared equally by the people. There is no poverty nor is there an upper class. o In the Depression-era America of the 1930s, many people joined the Communist Party because it seemed to be sympathetic to the needs and desires of the worker, rather than to the bosses. o Unfortunately, communism in practice tends to be somewhat different, as those who have lived in the 20th century know.

o This kind of communism sets up an authoritarian government, with the best goods and services going to those in government. o It was not uncommon in Soviet Russia for people to compete for government jobs not because they were such fans of communism, but because they got a larger apartment. o Capitalists complain about corruption, but communist governments are just as widespread with it as capitalist systems. Government members tend to rationalize that they deserve the best of everything because they are governing for the people.
