WHY GO SOLAR
ENERGY SECURITY: Average Power Demand- Supply gap of 12%, peak gap of 16.7% Rate of economic growth has been 9% p.a. while power sector growth has been 5-6%. This, when 412 million Indians have NO access to electricity. India needs to tap ALL possible sources of power thermal (coal, gas, oil), hydro, nuclear as well as renewable solar, wind, bio. India imports 78% of oil requirement. Will rise to 90% by 2030. Dependence on Persian Gulf. 53% of power produced from coal, which will not last beyond 2040/50 Nuclear will play a marginal role. (10% of total by 2030)

Tata BP Solar India Ltd

Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Conservation are key.

7

WHY GO SOLAR
INDIA UNIQUELY SITUATED TO TAP SOLAR (84 N 37 6 N) SOLAR IS FREE, FOREVER, & ABUNDANTLY AVAILABLE: 4-7 kWh/m sq/day X 300 clear sunny days in a year. 5000 trillion kWh/year SOLAR IS CLEAN & GREEN: No GHG emissions. A kilowatt solar plant can reduce carbon emission by 1 tonne: MODULAR AND SCALABLE: From Lanterns to MW-size plants DEMOCRATIC EMPOWERMENT: D D G ECONOMICALLY EFFICIENT: NO OR LOW MAINTENANCE COST, NO T&D LOSSES (35% ATC LOSSES IN CONVENTIONAL) NOT DEPENDENT ON GEOGRAPHY OR SCALE (unlike Wind) NO R&R ISSUES (unlike Hydro), NO GESTATION PERIOD (Hydro, Nuclear)
