Liquid Natural Gas Tank Inspection How its done till today

By Marine Authority regulations LNG Carriers and their tanks have to be inspected regularly every year Inspections have to be done when ships are in dry docks for maintenance Currently there are three different ways to do the inspection: Partial Inspection of steel patterns in physical reach (walk-through) - No way to inspect the roof patterns, where most of the deformations happen - Its a very time consuming and still only partial inspection - No information at all from hard-to-reach patterns - It takes two to three days for the inspection Set up of scaffolding inside the tank - Special light weight structure it is very expensive - Its very time consuming and can take several weeks for a full inspection Inspection by taking digital images of the steel patterns - Only a small area can be captured in high resolution at a time - Additional light sources have to be set up - Taking all needed pictures can take a couple of days - Still no 3D information available

Liquid Natural Gas Tank Inspection Introduction of the Photon 120 Laser Scanner

Liquid Natural Gas Tank Inspection 3D Inspection workflow

On pattern 4/4 and 4/3 from the corner you can see a deformation

Do a quick overview scan in only 30 seconds Make a selection of an area of interest and re-scan with highest resolution Inspect the high resolution scan for deformation When you zoom into the high resolution scan you can easily identify deformation

Liquid Natural Gas Tank Inspection 3D Inspection Level of Detail

Even in low resolution you can identify foot prints

Liquid Natural Gas Tank Inspection 3D Inspection Extract any information

Quickly extract Dimensions from the 2D view

FARO Laser Scanner Focus 3D Benefits of 3D Laser Scanning in LNG tank inspection

Cost reduction

Costs associated with scaffolding are significantly minimized Non-Profit downtime of vessel is reduced and therefore lost revenue minimized Photon120 system can be operated by only one engineer

Quality improvement

3D Scans provide 100-times higher resolution than conventional digital cameras Detailed 3D information captured with the scanner improves engineering designs Accurate and detailed designs improve engineers decisions that affect maintenance and start-up.
