EC305.7 1
OBJECTIVES

On completion of this period you would be able to

understand

• The relationship between channel bandwidth and

baseband band width .

• The relationship between channel bandwidth and

transmission time.

EC305.7 2
INTRODUCTION
What is Band Width?
• The band width is the difference between upper and
lower frequencies.

Example

• In MF range of frequency
• Upper side frequency = 300KHZ = f2
• Lower side frequency = 30KHZ = f1
• The band width (BW) = f2-f1
• BW = 300 – 30 = 270KHZ

EC305.7 3
RELATION BETWEEN CHANNEL BANDWIDTH
AND BASE BAND WIDTH

• When base band signal is modulated onto a carrier, the

resulting signal occupies a small portion of the spectrum
surrounding carrier frequency.
Channel Band Width
• When a carrier is amplitude modulated by a base band
signal (modulating signal), two other signals (known as
side bands) are generated at frequencies above and
below the carrier frequency, by an amount equal to
modulating frequency.

EC305.7 4
• Carrier frequency = 1000KHZ

• The modulating frequency = 10KHZ

• Upper side frequency = 1000+10 = 1010KHZ

• Lower side band frequency = 1000-10 = 990KHZ

• In the above problem the difference between highest

and lowest transmitting frequencies i.e

1010 KHZ – 990KHZ = 20KHZ

EC305.7 5
• Hence channel bandwidth = 20KHZ

• Which is twice that of modulating frequency

• From this it is proved that

Channel Bandwidth = 2 X Highest Modulating

(Base Band) frequency

HARTLEY’S LAW
• Provides relation ship between channel band width and
information capacity.

• Statement : It states that the amount of information that

can be transferred in a given time is proportional to Band
width for a given modulation scheme.
I=K tB , where
• I = Amount of information to be send
• K = A constant, whose value depends on modulation
• t = Time available.
• B = Channel band width
