Project Management: A project is a complex, non-routine, one time effort limited by the time, budget, resources & performance specifications designed to meet customer needs.

Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, securing & managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals & objectives.

The Characteristics of a Project are as follows:

- An established objective. Once they are met, project are closed - A defined life span With a beginning & end -Typically, doing something that has never done before - Specific time, cost & performance requirements. - The project is a single entity, while is participants may be many. - Project have definite life cycle. - All projects are unique, as the people & plans involved in similar projects also are different. - Teamwork is absolutely essential. People from all functional groups are needed.

-A project is subjected for lot of changes - Made to order - A project is fraught with risk & uncertainty. Categories of Projects: 1. Individual projects 2. Special projects 3. Matrix or aggregate projects 4. Staff projects

Importance Of Project Management: 1. Compression of the Product Life Cycle 2. Knowledge explosion 3. Increased customer focus 4. Global competition 5. Corporate downsizing 6. Small projects represent big problems

Roles & Responsibilities of Project Manager: - coordinating & integrating the activities across multiple functional lines. - Defining & maintaining the integrity of the project. - Development of project execution of plan. - Organizing for the execution plan. - Setting targets & development of systems & procedures for accomplishment of project objectives & targets. -Negotiations for commitments from suppliers, clients & project members. -Direction, co-ordination & control of project activities -Satisfy government, customer, promoters & public. -Managing human inter-relationships in the project organization. - Coping with risk associated with project management - Achievement of cash surplus- project objectives & higher productivity.
