The physical and biological world where we

live is called our Environment.

The environment includes our physical
surroundings like air (or atmosphere), water
bodies , soil (land) and all the organisms such
as plants, animals human beings and micro-
organisms like bacteria and fungi (called
decomposers).
 Pollution of water air and soil (land)
 Soil erosion

 Thinning of ozone layer

 Global Warming

 Deforestation

 Salinisation

 Depletion of natural resources

 Waste accumulation

Prevention and Control Of Air
Pollution
• Combustion :-
The technique of combustion is used for
controlling air pollution in those cases where the
pollutants are in the form of organic gases or
vapours.
2. Absorption :-
In the absorption method, the polluted air
containing gaseous pollutants is passed through a
scrubber (or tank) containing a suitable liquid
absorbent. The liquid absorbs the harmful gaseous
pollutants present in air. So, the air coming out of
scrubber is free from pollutants and it ts discharged
into the atmosphere.

3. FABRIC FILTERS:-
Using Fabric Filters air pollution is controlled. The
Process of controlling air pollution by using filters is
also known as “bag filtration”
4. WET SCRUBBER:-
Wet scrubber are the tanks the in which the
polluted air containing particulate pollutant are
sprayed by jets of water before they reach the
chimney . The water washes away the dust , soot
and fly-ash particles present in polluted air .It also
dissolved some of the harmful gases present in
polluted air. The clean air is discharged into the
atmosphere through the chimney.

Prevention and Control Of Water
Pollution
1.Industrial wastes should be treated chemically to neutralise
the harmful substances present in them, before
discharging into rivers.
2.Waste paper , plastics, waste food materials and rotting
fruits and vegetables should not be thrown into open
drains.
3. Solid wasters contain organic matter and effluents from
distilleries should not be thrown into water bodies. These
should be sent to biogas plants.
4. If a sources of water gets polluted with oil, then the oil
slick formed should be skimmed of from it’s a surface
with the help of suction device. Saw dust can also be
spread over oil slick to absorb as much oil as possible.
The contamination of soil ( or land) with solid waste,
acid rain, excess of fertilizers, insecticides and
herbicides is called soil pollution ( or land pollution).

Sources of Soil Pollution

1. Solid wastes
2. 2. Acid rain
Sources of Soil Pollution

1. Solid wastes:-
A lot of soil pollution is caused by solid
wastes. The solid wastes comes from homes, cattle
sheds, agriculture fields,industries,and many other
places. Solid waste accumulates in the form of
heaps.

2. Acid rain:-
Acid rain is caused by air pollution. The
acidic gases present in the polluted air produce
acoid rain. This acid rain falls to the soil and pollutes
it. It makes the soil acidic.
