In the previous class we have discussed about the
Types of manufacturing processes. Importance of manufacturing processes. Basic workshop processes.

M105.2

Objectives On completion of this period you would be able to:

know what is carpentry? Identify various Carpentry tools. Identify Marking &measuring tools in Carpentry Explain the construction of these tools State the specifications of these tools

State the Uses of these tools

M105.2

Have you ever seen manufacture of doors , windows wooden furniture etc ? Can you name the name of the manufacturing process used ? The manufacturing process is called Carpentry In this lesson we will learn some basic concepts of Carpentry.

What is Carpentry?
It is the processing of wood to obtain desired shapes and sizes of goods and Components like doors, windows, roofs, partitions etc,. The tools used in the wood working process are known as Carpentry tools

M105.2

Carpentry tools
The following are some of the Carpentry tools

Marking tools & measuring tools

Cutting tools Boring tools

Striking tools
Holding devices Miscellaneous tools

M105.2

Marking and measuring tools:

These tools are used for

Marking,

Measuring and
Checking the work at various stages.

M105.2

Pencils and pencil compass:

Fig.2
H,2H,HB, etc. are used for making dimensions and contours on wood work.

A special bigger sized compass is used for drawing circles of 25mm to 500mm.
M105.2 9

Carpenters folding rule:

It is a foldable wooden scale used for measuring and setting out dimensions up to 600mm. It consists of four pieces . Each is 6or 150mm joined

together by means of long pins and hinges.

It can be folded to single piece length.

Steel tape:
It is used for measuring longer dimensions.

It is flexible and can be coiled or rolled in a case.

It ranges from 0.6m to 2.5m

M105.2

Steel rule:
It is used for measuring and setting out linear dimension with accuracy of 0.5mm. Made of stainless steel and graduated in inches and centimeters. Available in different lengths ranges from 150mm to 600mm.

Straight edge:
Used for testing trueness of surfaces and edges It is a flat piece of wood or metal and has truely straight and parallel edges.

M105.2 14

Try square:
It used for Testing flatness of surface Marking parallel lines Marking and testing of right angles Available size of blades ranges from100mm to 300mm.

It is used for marking and testing 45 degrees.

Blade is fitted to stock at an angle of 45 deg. Available sizes 150mm to 300 mm. Fig.13

Combination square:
It is useful tool and consists of square, bevel square (protractor head) center square head and a rule. Used for checking angles, trueness of a surface and marking centers on end of round jobs
