An information system is a set of interrelated components that collect or retrieve, process, store, and distribute information to support decision making and control in an organization. System is an organized relationship among functioning units or components to achieve or accomplish goals. What is Information System?


An information system is a set of interrelated components that collect or retrieve, process, store, and distribute information to support decision making and control in an organization.

Binary Information
Digital computers use the binary number system. A binary digit is called a bit (0 or 1). Information is represented in digital computers in groups of bits. The word digital implies that the information in the computer is represented by variables that take a limited number of discrete or quantized values for example in decimal number system digits are 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.

Binary information is represented in a digital system by physical quantities called signals. Electrical signals such as voltages exist throughout a digital system in either one of the two recognizable values and represent a binary variable equal to 1 or 0.

Data and Information


Data consists of raw facts and figures such as an employee number, number of hours worked in a week, inventory part number or sales number. When facts are arranged in a meaningful manner, they become information. Information is a collection of facts organized so that they have additional value beyond the value of the facts themselves.

Data and information work the same way. Rules and relationship can be set up to organize data into useful, valuable information. Turning data into information is a process or a set of logically related tasks performed to achieve a defined outcome. The process of defining relationships among data to create useful information requires knowledge.
