UBICACIÓN EN
EL PLANETA
TIERRA
Para determinar la ubicación de un
lugar, trazamos líneas imaginarias
sobre la Tierra, de norte a sur y de
este a oeste. Estas líneas se llaman
paralelos y meridianos.
PARALELOS Y
MERIDIANOS
Los paralelos son líneas horizontales que nunca se tocan entre sí. En total son 180 paralelos:
90 en el norte y 90 en el sur. El paralelo principal es la línea del ecuador que divide a la Tierra
en dos mitades: hemisferio norte y hemisferio sur.

Los meridianos son líneas imaginarias verticales que van desde el Polo Norte al Polo Sur. Se
enumeran de 0° a 180° hacia el este y de 0° a 180° hacia el oeste. Son 360° meridianos en
total. El meridiano principal es el meridiano de Greenwich que divide a la Tierra en dos
mitades: hemisferio oeste y hemisferio este.
COORDENADAS GEOGRÁFICAS
Las coordenadas geográficas se establecen mediante el cruce de paralelos y meridianos, con lo
cual se permite establecer con exactitud la localización de un lugar. Para reconocer una
coordenada geográfica se deben conocer la longitud y latitud de un lugar

Es la distancia entre la línea del ecuador y cualquier otro punto de la


Latitud Tierra. La latitud puede ser norte y sur y se mide en grados (°), entre
0° y 90°.

Es la distancia entre el meridiano de Greenwich y cualquier otro punto


Longitud en la Tierra. La longitud puede ser este y oeste y se mide en grados (°),
entre 0° y 180°.

La red de coordenadas geográficas es una cuadrícula formada por líneas imaginarias,
paralelos y meridianos, que se disponen sobre la Tierra de manera que permiten ubicar la
posición exacta de un punto en la Tierra, llamada localización absoluta y también
determinar la latitud y longitud.
