• CONCLUSION
• Robotics Applications are playing significant role in various developmental
efforts benefiting the humanity.

• Globally there have been many initiatives towards exploiting the potentials of
Robotics and communication Technologies.

• It is the most challenging area of 21st century.

• Its application ranges from Humanoid to men-less-plant, Deep-sea-application

to space application, Agriculture to medicine, house hold goods to industries.

• Our paper presents about robotics basics and its emerging trends.
THE WORD “ROBOT”

“Robot” is derived from a Czech word meaning “forced labor”.

First appeared in a 1920 play R.U.R.(Rossum’s Universal Robots)

By Czech playwright Karel Capek.

DEFINITION
"A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed
to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through
various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of
tasks“
BASICALLY A ROBOT CONSISTS OF:

- A mechanical device, such as a wheeled platform, arm, or

other construction, capable of interacting with its environment

- Sensors on or around the device that are able to sense the

environment and give useful feedback to the device

- Systems that process sensory input in the context of the

device's current situation and instruct the device to perform
actions in response to the situation
• APPLICATIONS

Automotive industry

Medicine
Nuclear energy
Agriculture
Spatial exploration

Arts and entertainment
• Domo is an experimental robot by MIT designed to
interact with humans.

• The brainchild of Jeff Weber and Aaron Edsinger, its

name comes from the Japanese phrase for "thank you very
much“.

• Domo can be used to assist senior citizens.

• Originally funded by NASA, Toyota now backs the

robot's development.
DESIGN

• The goal of Domo is to contribute a novel approach to robot

manipulation in unstructured environments

• Domo uses 5 cameras (mounted in human-like eyeballs) connected to 12

computers to visually sense its environment so that it can navigate easily.

• The robot has two arms with gripping abilities and a head.

• It also has voice recognition capabilities and touch sensitivity

ABILITIES

• Domo will adapt to its surroundings by testing the physical

nature of things by touching them or shaking them.

• Its abilities include determining the volume of an item, placing

items on shelves, pouring drinks for humans, shaking hands,
and giving hugs.
 Robots are taking over, one household chore at a time.

 Mint, an automatic floor cleaner from Evolution Robotics.

 It sweeps and mops, but only on tile, wood, vinyl, linoleum, and laminate
floors.

 Unlike its cleaning compadres, the Mint does not require its
own cleaning fluid or store dirt in a compartment (that's messy
to empty).
 Instead, it has a removable cleaning microfiber cloth attached to the
bumper.
 Turn on the Sweep mode, and the Mint sweeps the floor; you
can wash and reuse for as long as the cloth lasts.

 Turn on Mop mode with a wet cloth attached for easy

mopping.

 It is also designed to work with Swiffer's disposable dry and

premoistened cleaning cloths.

 The Mint comes with a rechargeable battery, power adapter

and a NorthStar guidance beacon to prevent it from leaving the
room.
DESIGN
• Mint uses a NorthStar beacon to track its progress around a room so that it won’t miss any
spots while it is sweeping a room.

• Because it uses navigation technology, it cleans floors in a methodical, systematic way which
is very efficient.

• Designed into the robot is “perfect edge technology”.

• The Mint robot uses this to find edges and follow them in such a way that it won’t miss
corners.

• It picks up dirt that gets pushed into edges. The Mint automatic cleaner comes equipped with a
bunch of sensors to help it navigate.

• These help the cleaner avoid area rugs and carpets, and will also keep the robot from driving
off of steps or down the stairs
• ASIMO ( アシモ , ashimo) is a humanoid robot created by
Honda.

• Standing at 130 centimeters (4 feet 3 inches) and weighing 54

kilograms (114 pounds), the robot resembles a small astronaut
wearing a backpack and can walk or run on two feet at speeds
up to 6 km/h (4.3 mph).

• ASIMO was created at Honda's Research & Development

Wako Fundamental Technical

• The name is an acronym for "Advanced Step in Innovative

MObility".
Features
• Moving objects
ASIMO detects the movements of multiple objects, assessing distance and
direction.
Feature would include: the ability to follow the movements of people with
its camera, to follow a person, or greet a person when he or she
approaches.

• Postures and gestures

ASIMO can react to and be directed by not only voice commands, but also
to the natural movements of human beings.
Example: recognize when a handshake is offered or when a person waves
and respond accordingly.
It can also recognize movement directions such as pointing.
• Environment
ASIMO recognizes the objects and terrain of its environment
Eg. Recognizing potential hazards such as stairs, and by stopping and
starting to avoid hitting humans or other moving objects.

• Distinguishing sounds
ASIMO's can distinguish between voices and other sounds.
It responds to its name, faces people when spoken to, and recognizes
sudden, unusual sounds such as that of a falling object or a collision, and
faces in that direction. It can respond to questions, either by a brief nod, a
shake of the head or a verbal answer.

• Facial recognition
ASIMO can recognize faces, even when ASIMO or the human being is
moving. It can individually recognize approximately 10 different faces.
Once they are registered it can address them by name.
• PR2 combines the mobility to navigate human environments and the dexterity
to grasp and manipulate objects in those environments

Freedom to Innovate.

• The PR2 is an open platform. You can change the system to meet your needs
at any level.

APPLICATIONS IT CAN PERFORM

-> Fetch cooldrinks

-> Play pool
->Clean up with cart
DESIGN
• Backdriveable Arms
• PR2's arms are backdriveable and current controlled so PR2 can manipulate in
unstructured environments
• Spring Counterbalance
• PR2's arms have a passive spring counterbalance system so the arms float even
when the power is off.
• Wrist
• PR2's wrist has two continuous degrees of freedom and lots of torque so PR2 can
manipulate everyday objects from doors to frying pans.
• Gripper
• PR2's gripper can grasp everything from towels to tea cups, and brooms to brews.
• Mobility
• With a telescoping spine and an omnidirectional base that completed a marathon,
PR2 can work where you need it.
• Sensors Everywhere
• PR2's sensor suite and sensor processing and calibration libraries let you fuse
information from several sensors easily.
APSARA DESIGNED BY 8TH STD STUDENTS

• Robot Apsara meaning celestial

dancer developed by two 8th std
students.
• It makes up for its restricted base
movements with versatile arm, palm
and hip movements complete with a
skirt.
• Apsara gas 3 motors in the arm, two
at the bottom for movement and a
turnable for the hip which gives it a
360 degree rotational freedom.

pose, pour drinks, track faces and objects,
and respond to voice commands.
• The human skeletal and muscular systems are complicated for many reasons.

• For now, robots will most likely be manufactured for a limited number of distinct
tasks such as painting, welding or lifting.

• Presumably, once robots have the ability perform a much wider array of tasks, and
voice recognition software improves such that computers can interpret complicated
sentences in varying accents, we may in fact see robots doing our housework and
carrying out other tasks in the physical world.
