HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING
THIS PROBLEM?
PROJECTS: SUPPORT

• The problem is of child headed families (orphans)

• The rate at which people are dying because of HIV/Aids, and

the requests for funeral assistance that keeps on
escalating in my ward made me notice the increasing
number of orphans, child headed and widows/widowers.

• Poor grade seven results at the school in my ward and

general reluctance of certain children to go to school due to
lack of resources.

• Request for assistance by the school headmaster and

members of the community in my ward.

SUPPORTING OPRHANS
WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THE
PROJECT?
PROJECTS: SUPPORT

• It is an on going process.

SUPPORTING OPRHANS
IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?
PROJECTS:SUPPORT

• Yes this issue is very important because if left unattended to it will

further worsen their plight apart from being orphans , they will be
uneducated, when they are not educated they can not be employed.
• Skills training also requires some form of basic education. When a child
does not have enough resources they tend to be mischievous and their
performance in school is compromised.
• When a society does not educate their children, it is like breeding a
society that depends on handouts for livelihood. Also social misfits are
created from such negligence. The future of Norton as a community lies
in our children and the kind of education we give them today
determines the kind of Norton we will have in future.
• So as a lady councillor l was touched and I tried by all means to help
some of the orphans

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSING THIS
PROBLEM?
PROJECTS:SUPPORT

• Inviting social workers ,police, churches well wishers

to do awareness campaigns.

• The Police is called to address people on domestic

violence, its nature, child abuse (rape) and who to
approach should such misfortune befalls a families.

• The church is also educating people about HIV and

AIDS

SUPPORTING OPRHANS
WHO IS THE KEY TARGET? WHO IS
INVOLVED? ARE WOMEN AND MEN
EQUALLY INVOLVED?
PROJECTS: SUPPORT

• The key target is orphans, single

parents/widows/widowers

• The community as a whole, churches, social

workers, police, well wishers etc

• Yes men and women are equally involved

because the problem affects both regardless of
gender.

SUPPORTING OPRHANS
PARTNERSHIPS FORMED THROUGH THE
PROJECT
PROJECTS: SUPPORT

• I have partnered with Social workers, Police ,

well wishers and the community in this project

SUPPORTING ORPHANS
RESOURCEFULNESS: WHAT FINANCIAL,
HUMAN AND OTHER RESOURCES WERE
MOBILISED?
PROJECTS: SUPPORT

• Resources are the main limitation. Money to

purchase exercise books, text books and other
school requirements is from personal sources
which are limited.

now attending all lessons without being chased
back home.

assisted families.

• Feedback from the school headmaster – reports of

progress of certain pupils.

EFFECTIVENESS

• My project is very effective because we are doing

PROJECTS: SUPPORT

community based programmes.

• Beneficiaries are identified from the grassroots
therefore only those who deserve are assisted.
• Children that were not going to school are now
going to school
• School fees that was not paid has been paid
• Moral is high in the ward
• Feedback in the form of gratitude for assistance
• Children are now excelling in school

SUPPORTING ORPHANS
SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION

• This practice is sustainable and can be replicated by others.

PROJECTS: SUPPORT

What needs to be done is to source for funding. The

community needs to be encouraged to help the less fortunate
amongst them.

• Publishing/informing others of the plight of others also helps

to source for financial assistance.

• Leading by example also helps, today as Councillor I have

used my own resources, the next day it will be someone else,
individuals or coporates.

SUPPORTING ORPHANS
LESSONS LEARNED

• I have learned to network, seek assistance on behalf of

PROJECTS: SUPPORT

others. That is the major reason why I am a Councillor to

speak on behalf of others and to source that which is
required by our communities.

• To be a ray of hope for the less privileged

• To be a problem solver in the community

• Education is a basic need for every human being,

depriving one of that basic need is amounts to abuse.
