m A data warehouse is a logical collection of

" 9nformation gathered from many different operational

databases used to create business intelligence
that supports:
- Business analysis activities,
- Decision making tasks,
- A record of an enterprise's past
transactional and operational information,
stored in a database designed to favour :
- Efficient data analysis,
- Reporting.
. With data warehousing, you can provide a common data model
for different interest areas regardless of data's source.

2.Many inconsistencies are identified and resolved before loading

of information in data warehousing. This makes the reporting
and analyzing process simpler.

3. The best part of data warehousing is that the information is

under the control of users, so that in case the system gets
purged over time, information can be easily and safely stored
for longer time period.
. Because of being different from operational systems, a
data warehouse helps in retrieving data without slowing
down the operational system.

5. Data warehousing enhances the value of operational

business applications and customer relationship
management systems.

6.Data warehousing also leads to proper functioning of

support system applications like trend reports, exception
reports and the actual performance analyzing reports.
m A data mart is a repository of data gathered from operational data and other
sources that is designed to serve a particular community of knowledge
workers.

m 9n scope, the data may derive from an enterprise-wide database or data

warehouse or be more specialized.

m The emphasis of a data mart is on meeting the specific demands of a

particular group of knowledge users in terms of analysis, content,
presentation, and ease-of-use.

m Users of a data mart can expect to have data presented in terms that are
familiar

m ½ummarized data.
m Operational systems of Records.
m 9ntegration/transformation Programs.
m Current Detail.
m Meta data.
m Archives.
OLTP vs. OLAP

0 On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP):

- OLTP focuses on processing transactions such as orders,

invoices or general ledger transactions.

0 On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP):

- OLAP is a method of analyzing data in a

‡ Multi- dimensional format.
‡ Across Multiple time periods.
with a aim of uncovering the
business information within the data.
OLAP systems helps managers & analyst to
m Rapidly and easily examine key performance data.
m Perform comparison & trend analyses.

OLAP can be widely used in business areas like :

m ½ales & marketing analysis.
m Financial reporting.
m Quality tracking.
m Profitability analysis.

m Note: OLAP is not a data warehousing methodology: however

it is an integral part of data warehousing solution.
ΠOLTP applications tend to deal with atomized "record-at-a-time" data, whereas
OLAP applications usually deal with summarized data.

While OLTP applications generally do not require historical data, nearly every
OLAP application is concerned with viewing trends and therefore requires historical
data

ŒAccordingly, OLAP databases need the ability to handle tiPe-series data -- an

attribute that will be discussed in detail later in this paper.

While OLTP applications and databases tend to be organized around specific

processes (such as order entry),

ŒOLAP applications tend to be "subject oriented," answering such questions as

"What
Pr oducts are selling well?" or "Where are Py weakest sales offices?"
