LOVE IN THE CORNHUSKS, PATAY

NA TUOD SI MARIA CLARA and

TUBAG SA MANANANGGAL
LIT. 1- LITERATURES OF THE PHILIPPINES
AIDA RIVERA-FORD
 Born in Sulu, Aida Rivera-Ford crossed over to Negros Oriental in
1949 for an English degree at Silliman University. Records toast
her as the first editor of Sands and Coral, the school’s literary folio.
In 1954, she flew to the University of Michigan on a Fulbright grant
to secure her master’s degree in English.
 “Love in the Cornhusks” is one of five well-crafted stories for
which Rivera-Ford won the Jules & Avery Hopwood Prize in
Michigan. In 1955, the Sunday Chronicle’s This Week magazine
featured the prize-winning story, with illustrations by Rod Dayao.
From N.V.M. Gonzalez to Epifanio San Juan, critics were one in
hailing the story with uncommon praise, citing its masterful
subtlety but also its earnest vision—a rare case of art prevailing
upon all creeds and manners of persuasion.

PATAY NA TUOD SI MARIA CLARA by
LINDA ALBURO
Ah, kadto bang nagluspad nga hinigugma
sa linuiban nga si Crisostomo Ibarra?
Matud pa ni Mama kadto siya sulondon
magsigeg kablit sa arpa, manggiulawon
laming motimplag hamonada, hinayon
moamin kada humag nobena, matinahuron
ug unsa pa dihang uban nga mga—un-on
nga karon malisod na natong ispilingon.
Wala na tingali nahibilin rong arpa
ug labihan kamaha; maglutog hamonada
ug unsa to, kalaay ba anang magsisgeg nobena?
Si kinsa lay gusting santosong kay atong paantuson.
Ang kinahanglan sa babaye karon
maalam molalik sa awit nga iyang tukaron,
maabtik mangitag idalit nga sud-anon,
molihok bisag wala pay bendisyon.
Kon naa pa ron si Mama unsa kahay iayng ikasulti?
Nga labaw pang na-anghing kaniya si Maria Clara, mirisi.
TUBAG SA MANANANGGAL HUMAN
HUKMI SA GINOO by CORA ALMERINO
Sige Lord, ibutang ko sa impyerno.
Sunoga ang akong lawas ug mga pako.
Pero sa dili pa ko nimo isugba,
Paminawa sa ko.
Manananggal bitaw ko.
Inig gabii dili ko makadulog
Sa akong bana, kay mamalbal ko.
Inig buntag dili ko makahugas
Sa mga plato; dili ko makalaba
Dili sab ko makaluto kay mamawi
Kos a akong katulog. Tam-is ra ba
Kaayo ang akong pagkahinanok,
Kay layo ang kab-ot sa akong
Mga pako. Walay manghulga nako
Og asin o abo. Walay holy water
Nga molimpyo sa akong lawas.
TUBAG SA MANANANGGAL HUMAN
HUKMI SA GINOO by CORA ALMERINO
Lami kaayo ang mga tawo,
Ug tanan kabahin nila.
Lami kaayo. Kana bang kagumkom.
Aslom-aslom. Parat-parat. Tam-is…

Manananggal bitaw ko Lord.

Akong mga pako makakab-ot
Og mga bitoon. Akong dila
Motila sa kinahildamang dapit.
