On “Social Media Policy”

Social Media: An Instrument for Change
• Speed of Information Sharing – WhatsApp, Viber and Webpage links.
• Freedom of Expression via Twitter, Facebook and Blogs
• Individual groups with same ideology getting connected & increase in the
number of Online Associations and Crowd Mobilizations.
• Development of Mobile Technology – App version available for all needs –
Banking, Share Trading, Games, News, Shopping and Travel Booking etc
• First Generation Entrepreneur like Mark Zuckerberg (FB), Kunal Bahl
(Snapdeal ) and Sachin & Binny Bansal (Flipkart) have been inspiration to
Start Up enthusiasts.
• Brought in new vocal terminology as ‘viral’, ‘hashtag’,’un-friend’ etc.

• Govt. interest in Digitizing Citizen Data and Documentation – Digital India

Traditional Vs Social Media
• Reach - Traditional and Social Media have to co-exist and depend upon each
other. The new media also has its linguistic and network limitations.
• Accessibility – While the means of productions of Traditional media are
well spread; the social media tools are dependent upon accessibility and
software familiarity.
• Usability – Traditional Media production typically requires specialized skills
and training. Most Social Media does not, or in some cases reinvent skills, so
anyone can operate the means of production.
• Verification - The stretched production time verification of the information
easy in Traditional Media, where as, the Social Media being instant, the
information needs varification.
• Permanence - Traditional, once created, cannot be altered, whereas Social
Media can be altered almost instantaneously by comments or editing.
Govt. of India used Social Media extensively to reach
out to the Citizens about their numerous Schemes
such as
 Smart City Mission
 Make in India
 Digital India
 Start-Up India
 Skill India
 Swachh Bharat
 AMRUT
 HRIDAY
 Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna
