Radio Access Network Parameters

These parameters are used to determine the soft handover

state of the UE.
Subscriber Classes

Users can define

the percentage
of UE-s in each
Subscriber Class
used in the
simulation.
Subscriber Class Parameters

Subscriber Class Mixes Supported Data rates Different FER

criteria are
• Voice - Supports asymmetric rates
supported for
• Data (WEB, FTP, E-MAIL, Subscriber
WAP etc…) Classes
RF Environment Parameters

Users can characterize the delay spread and log normal

shadowing properties of the environment.
Image Parameters

A Probe UE is stepped through the simulation space to determine

“coverage”.
Image represents data rate that would be assigned if Probe UE was
added at bin location (the Nth+1 user)
UMTS Simulator Statistical Outputs

• The simulator provides a variety of outputs that

assist in understanding detailed system behavior:

– Coverage images for various data rates

– Linear Power Amplifier Requirements
– OVSF Code Limitations
– Channel Element Requirements
– Required power and achieved FER for both downlink and uplinks.
– Mobile Statistics - State of the downlink and uplink for each mobile
– Cell Statistics – noise rise, number of links at each data rate and
traffic channel power requirements.
Image Creator
Pilot Pollution Image
Pilot Pollution Areas • Pilot pollution occurs when there
are more strong pilots than the
number of demodulators (typically
3) in a subscriber unit.
• Pilot pollution areas typically
exhibit poor call performance.
• Counts the number of pilots per
bin that are within a user defined
threshold of the strongest pilot.

Number of Pilots
Downlink Achieved FER
• Shows the forward FER achieved
by the image probe at each bin
• Red areas indicate that the
forward FER exceeded the outage
criteria
Uplink Achieved FER Image
•Shows the uplink FER achieved by
the image probe at each bin
•Red areas indicate that the uplink
FER exceeded the outage criteria
Soft Handover State
• Identifies SHO States:
•0 Way (No Handover)
•1 Way Soft
•2 Way Soft,
•3 Way Soft,
•2 Way Softer,
•2 Softer 1 Soft
•3 Way Softer Handover
UE Received Power Image
• Shows the power
received at the subscriber
unit IF
• This power is equivalent
to “Io” in the Ec/Io term
• The mobile received
power image is useful for
comparison to drive test
data, which also reports
the total power received in
the subscriber IF (Io)
Downlink F-Factor Image
•The F-Factor image
identifies locations where
noise is excessive from
outside the sector
Uplink Required Power Image
• Depicts the required
power on the uplink that
is needed to meet the
FER criteria
• Provides and indication
of uplink coverage
Best Ec/Io Image
• Plot of the pilot power
per bin for the best serving
sector
• Provides and indication
of downlink pilot channel
performance
• Areas with pilot strength
that is less than finger
locking threshold would be
of concern
Best Ec/Io Server Sector Image
• Identifies the best
serving sector for all
geographic locations
within the simulation
space according to the
pilot Ec/Io level
