Sistemas para prevención de crecimiento
Marino (MGPS)

Environmental Aspects
Is copper-oxide forbidden as an anti-fouling compound? If not, why
?

• Copper(I)oxide > Copper(II)oxide > Salts/Oxides

• Copper is easy to degrade biologically via
several degradation reactions and therefore is
approved by law.
• In drinking water max. 2,000 mg/m³ is allowed.
• Natural seawater contains approx. 40 mg copper
compounds per litre.
Cathodic Proteccíon
• Every kind of metal, when submerged in an electrolyte, such as seawater, w
ill build up a natural potential (mV), by sending positive ions into the solution
and leaving negative electrons behind. Consequently, the metal becomes n
egative and the surrounding seawater is positively loaded. This potential ca
n be measured in mV.

• All metals have a unique potential. The more negative this value, the more li
kely this metal will corrode. These potentials can be tabulated and form the
Electro-chemical Series, which shows magnesium as one of the most negati
ve (active) metal.

How to Design an Suitable ICCP System?

Based on:

1. General arrangements of the structure

• Surface areas
• Coated or uncoated
• Design lifetime
• Steel type(s)
• Additional steel parts
2. Operation area
3. Applicable standards
4. In-house experiences
Proteccíon of Mild Steel and limitations:
• Natural potential of S355:
• In sea water ~ -600 mV
• In mud / anaerobic conditions ~ -500 mV
According to norm: EN 12954 2001
• Shifting the natural potential of steel S355 in sea water to -
800mV to achieve galvanic Proteccíon.
• According to norm: DNV-OS-J101 Design of offshore wind turbine structure
s (2011)/ EN 12954 2001 / EN 12473
• Shifting the natural potential of steel S355 in mud line and below to
-900mV to prevent Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC)
• According to norm: DNV-OS-J101 Design of offshore wind turbine structure
s (2011)/ EN 12954 2001 / EN 12473
• Maximum potential of -1150 mV (-1100 mV*) OFF potential at the fi

-15M
0,3 V
For monopiles in water with depths larger than approximately 15m,
it may be difficult to achieve sufficient cathodic Proteccíon at the
seabed from anodes located solely at the transition piece between
-30M
tower and pile due to a large number of anodes required and a
limited surface area available for distribution of anodes.

ICCP Offshore Wind Turbines
• Easy to install
• Cheaper as sacrificial anodes
• Low weight addition to the structure (internal and external)
• Relatively low hydrogen gas development (internal)
• Monitoring and adjusting from shore side by SCADA system
• Environmentally sound
• Long lifetime > 30 years
INTERNAL CATHODIC Proteccíon WITH ICCP

Cathode reactions:

Anode reactions:
INTERNAL CATHODIC Proteccíon
At higher potentials (more negative than -900 mVAg/AgCl),
hydrogen gas begins to evolve and becomes the dominant
reaction at the cathode.

With ICCP the development of hydrogen gas is much lower as

with sacrificial anodes.

Reduced Hydrogen Gas Development Software (RHDS)

Advantages of ICCP for Wind Turbines
• Cheaper as conventional sacrificial anodes
• Relatively low hydrogen gas development
• Low weight addition to the structure internal and external
• Monitoring and adjusting from shore side by SCADA system
• Environmentally sound (Wind supposed to be green)
• Long lifetime > 30 years
