 Location
•- The Malacca Straits – the narrow stretch of 890km
waterway that separates Indonesia, Malaysia and
Singapore – is one of the most crucial areas to global
trade.
•The main shipping channel between the Indian Ocean
and the Pacific Ocean.

Significance
•-One of the most crucial choke points in the
world.
• The shortest sea route to move goods from the
Persian Gulf to Asian markets. It is over one-third
shorter than the closest alternative sea-based
route
•The narrowest point in the Strait is only
2.8 km wide, which creates a natural
bottleneck for shipping.
• It links major economies such as Middle
East, China, Japan, and South Korea.
 Trade
-Port-kingdoms began to flourish in the third century AD.
-Dominated by Srivijaya, Majapahit , Malacca. Portuguese,
Dutch.
- Used for intercontinental trade since the times of Classical
Greece and Rome

Culture
-Historic colonial towns with its government
buildings, churches, squares and fortifications.
-Ethnic quarters, the many languages, worship and
religious festivals, dances, costumes, art and music,
food, and daily life.

Civilization
- Emerged as a centre for Islamic learning and
dissemination, and encouraged the development of
the Malay language, literature and arts.
-Golden age of Malay sultanates in the archipelago.
-Classical Malay became the lingua franca of the
Maritime Southeast Asia.
-Jawi script became the primary medium for cultural,
religious and intellectual exchange.
