INTRODUCTION
• Lateral thinking is a term coined by Edward de
Bono , a Maltese psychologist, physician, and
writer in the year 1967.
• de Bono defines Lateral Thinking as methods
of thinking concerned with changing concepts
and perceptions.
• Lateral Thinking, is the ability to think
creatively.
WHAT IS LATERAL THINKING?
• Lateral thinking is a manner of solving
problems using an indirect and creative
approach via reasoning. It involves ideas
which may not be obtainable using traditional
step-by-step logic.
• When in a situation when your shoes are not
clean , put your sock on your hand and apply a
bit of spit and polish to shoe with sock..!!
Types of Thinking Tool
• Idea Generating Tool (Break the Status Quo)
Random Entry Idea Generating Tool
• Provocation Entry Idea Generating Tool
• Movement Techniques
• Challenge Idea Generating Tool
• Concept Fan Idea Generating Tool
• Disproving

• Focus Tools(Search for New Ideas)

• Harvest Tools(Receive more value from Idea
Generation)
• Treatment Tools(Face the Reality)
1. Random Entry Idea Generating Tool
• The thinker chooses an object at random, or a
noun from a dictionary, and associates it with
the area they are thinking about.
2. Provocation Entry Idea Generating
Tool
• This use any of the provocation techniques-
Wishful thinking, exaggeration, reversal, escape,
distortion, or arising. The thinker creates a list of
provocations and then uses the most outlandish
ones to move their thinking forward to new
ideas.
3. Movement Techniques
• The thinker develops provocation operations
by the following methods: extract the
principle, focus on the difference, moment to
moment, positive aspects, special
circumstances.
4. Challenge Idea Generating Tool
• ASK WHY ?
5. Concept Fan Idea Generating Tool
• Ideas carry out concepts. This tool
systematically expands the range and the
number of concepts in order to end up with a
very broad range of ideas to consider.
6. Disproving
• Based on the idea that the majority is always
wrong, take anything that is obvious and
generally accepted as “goes without saying”,
question it, take an opposite view, and try to
convincingly disprove it. This techniques is
similar to de Bono’s “Black Hat” of the Six
Thinking Hats, which looks at the ways in
which something will not work.
SIX THINKING HATS
• There are 6 thinking Hats They are;
 INFORMATION HAT-
 FEELINGS HAT-
 CREATIVE HAT –
 BENEFITS HAT –
 JUDGEMENT HAT –
 THINKING HAT-
THE WHITE HAT
• The information seeking hat.
• What are the facts?
• What information is available ? What is
relevant?
• When wearing the White hat we are neutral in
our thinking.
THE RED HAT
• What do you feel about the suggestions?
• What are your gut reactions?
• What intuitions do you have?
• Don’t think too long or too hard.
THE GREEN HAT
• This is creative mode of thinking.
• Green represents growth and movement.
• In green hat we look to new ideas and
solutions.
• Lateral Thinking wears a green hat.
THE YELLOW HAT
• The sunshine hat.
• It is Positive and constructive.
• It is about effectiveness and getting a job
done.
• What are the benefits, the advantages?
THE BLACK HAT
• The caution hat.
• In black hat the thinker points out errors or
pit-falls.
• What are the risks or dangers involved?
• Identifies difficulties and problems.
THE BLUE HAT
• The control hat, organizing thinking itself.
