WELCOME TO THE

Prepared by: ALDO A. DELA CRUZ

Things to remember!!
1. Do not answer in chorus
2. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized
3. Maintain academic atmosphere at all times
Status Check!!!???
Task:
The leader of the group will choose a colored
sheet posted on the board.
Each group is given 3 minutes to discuss to
answer the guided question given.
2 mins is given per group to present of the
output to the class .
Guided Questions ( 3mins)
a. Determine what factors could be involved in the
scenario.
b. Determine whether you think the statement is
always true, sometimes true, or never true.
Explain your conclusion.”( 2 sentences)
The number of books read is
related to the size of your
vocabulary.
The years someone invests to
the compound interest he will
earn.
Level of water lowers in a fish
tank, the volume of the habitat
for the fish decreases.
Temperature to the number of
clothing layers people wear
The number of outfits
purchased by a teenage girl is
related to the size of the house
she lives in.
The times one runs is to one is
to have cardiovascular
problems.
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
• determine the relationship between two variables.
• use scatter plots to determine the relationship
between variables.
• calculate the correlation coefficient.

Plot Me!!
Task:
Plot Me!!
• Each student choose a table, then plot of the given values.
• After 3 minutes, select a pair/buddy and share the individual output.
Compare your work and discuss the answer in the Guided Question given.
• Output will be presented to the class.
Guided Questions ( 5mins)
• Identify the variables?
• How strong do you think the relationship exit between
the two variable given?
• How could you measure the strength of the
relationship?

Correlation Analysis
Correlation is another way of
assessing the relationship between
variables.

It measures the extent of

correspondence between the ordering of
two random variables.

A correlation exists between two

variables when one of them is related
to the other in some way.
• A scatter plot (or scatter diagram) is used to show the
relationship between two variables

Correlation is the strength of linear
association between two numerical
variables in a population is determined
by the correlation coefficient, r, whose
range is -1 to +1.
Correlation
Only concerned with strength
of the relationship
No causal effect is implied
a. What type of correlation do we have if the correlation coefficient is -0.43?
b. What type of correlation do we have if the correlation coefficient is 0.74?
c. What type of correlation do we have if the correlation coefficient is 0.03?
d. What type of correlation do we have if the correlation coefficient is -0.81?
e. What type of correlation do we have if the correlation coefficient is -0.61?

a. Weak negative.

Evaluation ( 10mins)
1. An investigator is interested in predicting scores for a measure of cognitive function
from the number of hours of sleep a person gets on average. She obtains scores for both
the number of hours of sleep and cognitive function from 10 people. Higher scores for
cognitive function reflect higher levels of performance.

Note:
1. Perfect positive correlation: all the points lie along a line
with positive slope.
2. Perfect negative correlation: all the points lie along a line
with negative slope.
3. If the points lie along a horizontal or vertical line: no
correlation.
4. If the points exhibit some other nonlinear pattern: no linear
relationship, no correlation.
5. Need some way to measure correlation.
Assignment
• An investigator obtains scores for job satisfaction and
blood pressure from each of 10 employees. Higher
scores for job satisfaction reflect higher levels of job
satisfaction.
• What is the correlation coefficient between Job
Satisfaction
