International Standard
Book Number-ISBN
A unique international
identifier for books
Introduction of ISBN
The full form of ISBN is International Standard Book
Number. It is a unique identifier assigned to each
edition of every published book and book-like product.
It is a catalog number for books.
Different Parts of an ISBN
Number
Before January 2007 , ISBN was a 10 digit number which was divided
by hyphens into 4 parts. Like-

(from left to right)

Part 1 = country code
Part 2 = publisher code
Part 3 = title
Part 4 = check digit
For 13-digit,the extra part is a prefix. Like-
Importance of ISBN
Some major importance of ISBN are here-
 It is a catalog number for every published book or
book-like products.
 Saves the valuable time of staff by replacing the
handling of long bibliographic descriptive records.
 It is a machine readable form of 13-digit code. So
it is error free.
 Does the right management and monitors the
sales data.
Calculate Check Digit of a
ISBN
 This process can be done with 2 methods.
 First one is-
 A check digit for 10 digit ISBN is calculated in the
following way :
1. The check digit is calculated on a modulus of 11 with
weighting factors 10 to 2 .
2. Then we need to multiply each digit by its weight and
add the values.
3. After that we have to divide the sum by the modulus 11 .
4. Last step is to subtract the reminder from 11. That will
be the check digit.
An example of this type is given below-
ISBN 1 8 5 6 0 4 1 4 9
Weighting 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2
factors
Values 10 72 40 42 0 20 4 12 18

values = 10+72+40+42+0+20+4+12+18
= 218
After dividing by 11 , the result is 19 with a remainder of 9 .
So the check digit is = 11 – 9 = 2
The complete sequence of this ISB is : 1-85604-149-2
In the alternative method we can number it in sequence from 1 to 9.
The next steps are like the previous method.
An example is-
ISBN 1 8 5 6 0 4 1 4 9

Weighting 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
factors

Values 1 16 15 24 0 24 7 32 81

Values = 1+16+15+24+24+7+32+81 = 200

Now , 20 / 11 = 18 with a remainder of 2.
Here the check digit is 2 .

The Conversion chart : ISBN -10 TO ISBN-13:

In this process we have to add 978 at the front of the number.
Then we have to number them like 1 3 1 3 1 3 …….from the first
to last as weighting factor.
The next steps are to find the check digit. Only we
have to divide the product by 10 . Here is an example
-

ISBN 9 7 8 0 9 4 0 0 1 6 7 3
Weigh 1 3 1 3 1 3 1 3 1 3 1 3
ting
factor
s
values 9 21 8 0 9 12 0 0 1 18 7 9

values = 9+21+8+9+12+1+18+7+9 = 94
Now , 94/10 = 9 with a remainder of 4 .
So the check digit is = 10 – 4 = 6 .
The ISBN -13 becomes : 978-0-940016-73-6 .
